  1. DIY Paver Patio: Everything You Need To Know To Build One Yourself This DIY brick patio project isn’t technically difficult, but be prepared to devote a big chunk of time and energy to it. You’ll haul tons of dirt, gravel, stone and brick before you’re done. Proper base preparation is a matter of some debate. Choose a mostly even area so that you don't have to level the ground before laying the concrete. Constructing a concrete patio is a challenging but rewarding DIY project. It requires careful planning and preparation, as well as a range of tools and materials. The process includes marking and excavating the area, creating and levelling forms, mixing and pouring concrete, and finishing the surface. While it can save money compared to hiring a contractor, it is physically demanding and requires specific knowledge and skills. Sweep the Bricks With Polymeric Sand Apply a 4 to 5-inch layer of three-quarter-inch crushed stone. Then, mist it with water to settle it into a smooth, firm surface. Over time, refill any low spots to maintain the patio. Yet another option is fieldstone, the rocks removed from the soil when land is cleared. Though truly distinctive when installed properly, its finished surface is much rougher than flat stones like slate and bluestone. 2. 4913 Rio Linda Blvd Sacramento, California, United States 95838 Cutting stone is easy--though very loud and messy--using a circular saw with a masonry blade that has diamond chips bonded to the edge. These blades cost $20 and up each and can cleanly cut through 1-in. They work much better and last longer than the commonly available aluminum oxide abrasive blades. You will need spray paint, stakes, 2 x 4’s, and/or string to mark off the patio area. You will also need tools to dig and clear the area, such as shovels, gloves, and a wheelbarrow. Lumber, deck screws, and a level are also necessary to create a form for the concrete. Before you spread sand to lock the stones and bricks into place, pack dirt around the perimeter. Strips of landscape fabric and fold them up against the stones around the outside perimeter. To straighten the form, use strings along the sides of the form as a reference line.Yet another option is fieldstone, the rocks removed from the soil when land is cleared. If it’s not compacted tightly, the soil will shift and so will your pavers.Place stakes every 36 inches along the outside of the form to hold the edges straight. If you find that as you get toward the top of the base layer that your gravel is too large, use the bow rake to pull the larger pieces out. If you pile on all 4″ at once, it’s unlikely you’ll be able to compact it properly. It’s best to lay half of the gravel (2″) and compact it first, then to add the second layer (2″) and then compact that. If you are using larger pavers and installing the patio yourself, you may want to take weight into consideration. Using brick is one of the easiest ways to build a small patio. Tap it into place with a rubber mallet if the level needs https://dochub.com/m/shared- document/clearviewbuildersiinc/dbnaAMqK9yyOYJOKGNXJm0/clear-view-builders-construction-building-dreams- inside-and-out-pptx?dt=gJDPzhaeVQjy3xM92k8H to be adjusted. Leave a gap of 1cm, or buy leave-in-place paving spacers for added reassurance if needed – between each slab. This is especially important if your designing a patio with more complex paving patterns. If your design works, take a few pictures for reference before pulling the pavers up. We bought ours in upstate New York, where 1-in.-thick bluestone costs about $4 per square foot delivered. Tiny patios and grand patios alike, building one yourself not only cuts costs but brings the pride and personal satisfaction of a job well done. Of course, a simple design is the best way to go if you’re unsure about building a patio. And if you still don’t think it’s the best idea for you after reading through these steps, you can find a reputable patio contractor near you. You’ve finished your simple patio, and now it’s time to enjoy it for years to come- or is it? Luckily, concrete patios don’t require much maintenance compared to, for example, wooden decks. Laying a patio requires both precision and patience, and each of the below steps will need to be completed in turn in order to achieve a professional finish. The delivery truck dumped the pea gravel onto my driveway in a giant heap. My dad and I then shoveled the pea gravel into a wheelbarrow, wheeled it to the patio area, dumped it, and spread it out. There are certainly fancier gravel types than the pea gravel I chose if your budget allows but I loved how the pea gravel felt under my feet.
