  1. OpenVMS Enterprise Backup Strategy Andy Schneider OpenVMS Business Management Hewlett-Packard andy.schneider@hp.com

  2. OpenVMS Enterprise Backup Strategy To provide OpenVMS users with a CHOICE of data backup and restoration solutions, thus allowing the maximum in flexibility when implementing their data protection strategy.

  3. Agenda • Summary of OpenVMS Enterprise Backup Solutions Today • OpenVMS-Centric Solutions • Multi-Environment Solutions • Overall Strategy Direction • Specific Plans for each offering • Where each is going • How to get from one to another • Supporting OpenVMS Integrity Environments • Decision Points – How to choose a solution?

  4. Enterprise Backup offerings for OpenVMS Today • OpenVMS-centric and produced by HP • BACKUP Utility – shipped with OpenVMS • Storage Library System (SLS) – Original solution • Archive Backup System (ABS) – Next generation solution • OpenVMS-centric and provided by 3rd Parties • I-S-E Enterprise Backup – based on BACKUP utility • Software Partners TapeSys – based on BACKUP utility, precursor to SLS product • Multi-environment (O/S) solutions • HP OpenView Data Protector – Disk and media agents for OpenVMS • Legato NetWorker – “Storage Node” for OpenVMS • Veritas, CA, others – Client-only solution for OpenVMS

  5. Overall Strategy for OpenVMS Enterprise Backup Solutions • Introduce new solutions that solve many of the problems that arise with the change in customer environments to Heterogeneous SANs • Work with technologies within HP which are working to solve the data protection problem • Partner with external solution providers who solve this problem on other heterogeneous platforms today ANDwho have a presence with customers today within their SAN • To continue to support existing OpenVMS-produced tools that customers have relied upon for many years, and provide evolution paths as apporpriate • Continue supporting and enhance the BACKUP Utility • Performance improvements, enhancements and new tape support for ABS • Maintenance support only for SLS • To continue to embrace 3rd party vendors who offer homogeneous backup/restore solutions (I-S-E and Software Partners) • Insure that the majority of these solutions exist on Alpha and Integrity Server Platforms for OpenVMS

  6. OpenVMS BACKUP Utility Plans • Continues to be core capability provided by OpenVMS • Continuing to release new versions • OpenVMS V7.3-2, V8.2, V8.2-1, beyond • Support for new FC components and tape devices • Continue to support native OpenVMS products • The foundation for ABS and MDMS enhancements • Some enhancements planned during 2005/2006 • Investigate more modern backup techniques • EVM, snaps, clones, etc. • Performance, Security enhancement potential • Integrity Server port completed and included in OpenVMS V8.2 kit!!!

  7. Storage Library System (SLS) • SLS V2.9H shipped in Q1 2004 • SLS V2.9J shipped in Q1 2005 • Support Plans into the Future • Place SLS into Maintenance Status during 2005/6 • Support new versions of the O/S (allow existing SLS apps to work) • No new features will be added • No new tape drives will be qualified • SLS WILL NOT be ported to Integrity Servers • Mixed-architecture Alpha/Integrity clusters mean customers can exist long-term with SLS via Alpha connectivity to storage used by applications on Integrity servers.

  8. How do customers evolve from SLS • SLS Customers can move to ABS • Cost-effective since license/service is enabled with SLS license • Not “automatic” since some migration steps necessary • Database migration tools provided w/ABS (being updated) • Migration “guide” to be updated – part of ABS doc set • White Paper and Service Offerings being developed to assist in necessary scripting/scheduling changes • Presentation on Migration Techniques during this event • SLS Can move to 3rd party VMS-based solutions • ISE – BACKUP Utility basis for solution – similar to ABS • Excellent option for customers looking for more ABS-like OpenVMS BACKUP utility-based solution, porting to Integrity servers in H1 2005 • Software Partners TapeSys– SLS Predecessor • Integrity port in H1 2005; Supports ODS5 today (SLS does not) • Migration from SLS to TapeSys MUCH simpler – simple updates to existing files

  9. Archive Backup System (ABS) • ABS V4.2 Shipped in Q1 2004 • Included Minor features, device and O/S support • ABS V4.3 Shipped in Q1 2005 • Included Minor features, device and O/S support • Overall Plans into the future (no current end date) • New Releases to support O/S changes (file system, backup) • Performance Improvements and New Features will be introduced with each new version. • Support appropriate new tape devices into the future (ESL, MSL, etc) • Actively support migration to ABS from SLS with tools/services/whitepapers. • Integrity Server port completed with V4.3 release!!!!

  10. HP OpenView Data Protector • Ongoing ownership by StorageWorks division • HP OpenView DataProtector V5.1 shipped over a year ago • OpenVMS Media and Disk Agents • ODS5 Disk Support • Provides ability to do backup/restore on an OpenVMS system, driven by a server on a non-OpenVMS node (UNIX, Windows) • Ongoing Enhancements • Support for Oracle Databases – H1 2005 • Integrity Sever Port – Q3 2005 • Support for Rdb Databases – Late 2005 Will be an integrated part of the • Future support includes “bare metal” restore, and possibly an OpenVMS Server • HP OpenView Data Protector suite of products – will NOT be isolated from other heterogeneous HP solutions

  11. Legato NetWorker for OpenVMS • Marketing, Technical and Service Partnership for NetWorker® family of Products • Legato delivers both a client and “storage node” for OpenVMS platforms for NetWorker • First release with OpenVMS Support shippedin December 2002 • Support for ODS5, Oracle and Oracle Rdb Databases shipped Summer 2004. • Supports OpenVMS Alpha today and Integrity Server platforms in H1 2005. • White Paper available describing NetWorker interaction with OpenVMS • Future Plans include “cold metal” restore support, and potential OpenVMS Server support Shipped NetWorker® evaluation kit with OpenVMS V8.2 Alpha distribution

  12. OpenVMS Integrity and Enterprise Backup • Mixed-architecture clusters (Alpha/Integrity) allow for: • Shared SAN storage between both architectures • Shared direct-attached storage via MSCP serving from one architecture to the other • Alpha or Integrity-based applications, therefore, can manipulate storage from either perspective • Applications existing on only one architecture can have access to the other architecture via OpenVMS Clustering • SLS on Alpha can continue to access Integrity-driven storage • DataProtector on Alpha can continue to access Integrity-driven storage (until their port is complete) • Any Integrity-based solution can continue to access Alpha-driven storage for as long as the mixed-architecture cluster exists

  13. How do customers choose a backup solution? • If they have no solution today and need one • Consider Heterogeneous solution – better suited to SAN storage • Should be driven first and foremost by IT environment requirement • HP OpenView Data Protector –HP-branded solution, 1-stop shopping • Legato NetWorker – Valued 3rd party solution, HP services available • Consider ABS or 3rd party Homogeneous solution if VMS-only without multi-cluster or non-SAN storage • If they use ABS today • Stick with ABS if they want minor enhancements but support of more modern tape devices, or porting to Integrity servers • Consider Heterogeneous Solution if business dictates • If they use SLS today • Stick with SLS if their environment doesn’t change • Migrate to ABS, I-S-E, or Software Partners solution if more active development/support model is desired (or Integrity support required) • Consider Heterogeneous Solution if business dictates
