  5. 2 Wireless Global Market Trends & Driving Forces

  6. Alcatel-Lucent is and will continue to be a KEY wireless player with a large installed base worldwide … LTE: Selected by for LTE commercial network AT&T WCDMA: 60+ customers in 40 countries GSM: 190 customers in 100 countries CDMA: 70+ customers in 36 countries TD-SCDMA: Tier 1 supplier of China Mobile LTE: 40 Customer Trials

  7. Demand & Trends “Network Connectivity on demand” driving the need for a solution that offers • Faster roll out • Availability where no wired connectivity exists • Cost-effectiveness • Increased communications efficiency Multipath backup scenarios are essential for businesses to • Mitigate the risk of network downtime • Ensure business continuity in times of natural calamities/wireline connection failures

  8. Why 3G? Cost-effective multi-path connectivity, compared to ISDN/FR leased lines Quick deployment option for telemetry applications, remote locations, construction sites Secure, seamless primary connectivity for low bandwidth/telemetry applications

  9. Typical WAN Deployments for 3G Wireless • Compelling WAN Backup Alternative - Network outage - Disaster recovery • Primary Connectivity • Low bandwidth applications • ATM, gas stations, telemetry applications • Faster deployment required • Construction sites, smaller retail stores • Temporary Connectivity • Nomadic sites, exhibitions • Kiosks, mobile vans • Instant connectivity for new branches • Remote Locations/No Wired Connectivity

  10. 3G Compared to Other Technologies

  11. 3 Alcatel-Lucent Value Proposition Wireless WAN for CPE

  12. Wireless WAN for Primary Access OA5510 BroadbandNetwork 3G/HSDPA 3G Link Carrier 3G Network • Uses 3G carrier network as the access network • Ideal for itinerant solution (exhibition, nomadics) • No need for operator technicians in temporary connection • Usable for both connecting to HQ and to the Internet

  13. Wireless WAN for Backup Access BroadbandNetwork Failed Primary OA5510 3G Carrier 3G Network When primary access to broadband network fails, 3G link is activated to provide backup Link survivability is transparent to the IP application 3G Link FOR xDSL Primary WAN link, 3G is desired backup not ISDN and xDSL

  15. Dial on Demand • Dial on Demand establishes the 3G WAN connection only when required. • The link is established when data needs to be routed from CPE to WAN. • The link is cut when there is no more traffic for longer than an idle duration. • Dial on Demand is driven by outgoing data flows, which can be classified by configuration.

  16. Backup Interface Switchover The 3G WAN interface can operate as a backup interface for another primary WAN interface. When the primary link goes down, switchover to 3G backup can be established automatically or when classified traffic requires it. While backup is operational, the primary WAN is still monitored. When the primary WAN is operational again, the 3G backup is turned off and traffic goes back through primary WAN.

  17. 3G Modem Management • The 3G USB modem can be plugged in at any time. The 5510 USG: • Detects insertion and removal • Stores the modem network detection and selection configuration • Restores the configuration after unplug/plug • Managed data • GSM band selection : automatic or select (GSM|EGSM|WDCMA…) • PLMN search : list Public Land Mobile Networks • PLMN select : automatic or select • SIM lock : lock/unlock • GSM profile : for Authentication parameters

  18. 4 Wireless Networks and Supported 3G Modems

  19. Wireless Networks • Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) • Umbrella term for the third generation radio technologies developed within 3GPP • High Speed Packet Access (HSPA) • Introduced in Releases 5 (Downlink) and 6 (Uplink), it increases bit rates and improves packet-switched applications. HSDPA delivers up to 14Mbps in the downlink and HSUPA returns 5.8Mbps in the uplink. By late 2007, there were 166 commercial HSDPA networks in 75 countries, plus 38 network commitments. Per the Global mobile Suppliers Assn (GSA), over 45 HSUPA networks are planned, in testing or have launched. • HSPA+ • Evolution of HSPA that added multiple input/ multiple output (MIMO) antenna capability and 16QAM (Uplink)/ 64QAM (Downlink) modulation. Coupled with improvements in the radio access network for continuous packet connectivity, HSPA+ allows Uplink speedsof11Mbps and Downlink speeds of 42Mbps. • Long Term Evolution (LTE) • LTE (both radio and core network evolution) is now on the market. Release 8 was frozen in December 2008 and this has been the basis for the first wave of LTE equipment. LTE specifications are very stable, with the added benefit of small enhancements being introduced in Release 9, which was functionally frozen in December 2009.

  22. 5 FAQ

  23. FAQ – 5510 Prerequisites • What prerequisites are required for 3G support ? • 3G support is included in 5510 R3.0 You have only to add a 3G USB modem and a provider account with the appropriate SIM card . • Which applications are compatible with 3G WAN ? • There is no specific restriction other than the link bandwidth and its effect on latency • VOIP can be affected by such network parameters.

  24. FAQ –3G Accounts and Providers • Where are the 3G account parameters stored ? • If I change the 3G key, is the same account used ? • Wireless network parameters can be stored in your profile and applied on any modem. • Can we lock the 3G network to be used ? • Yes • How are network preferences managed ? • By configuration and/or profile • What about the SIM card ? • Get one from your wireless provider. The SIM card can be protected with a SIM lock code. • What service plan do I need ? How do I obtain one ? • Your provider can help you find the right plan, based on your SLA, bandwidth, traffic, etc. • You need to contract an account.

  25. FAQ – 3G USB Modem • Which 3G USB modem are supported ? • See the latest list of supported modems at <the URL of the support site page with this list goes here> • What about 3G USB modem firmware update ? • Use the 3G USB modem tool and probably a PC.
