Background • Ron Goodwitz, a member and former chairman of the Illinois State Board of Education, started the Students First Foundation to raise awareness about the lack of funding for educational programs in Illinois • PR Firm Serafin & Associates, Inc., who was working with Goodwitz to launch the Foundation, contacted SurfersNet to help build a Web presence
Challenges • Timing: the site needed to be live as quickly as possible • Branding: the site needed to have a strong professional look while evoking sympathy and support for the issue • Flexibility: the site needed to be able to grow with the Foundation • Currency: the site needed to be updated often to maintain interest and quickly distribute information
SurfersNet’s Solutions • Create an immediate text-only site that would grow to be a full-graphics version and expanded further over time • Flexible site organization for growth and consistent re-evaluation of organization • Updateable sections and flexible working arrangements for maximum responsiveness
The Basic Site • First, SurfersNet created a basic, text-only version of the site that was live within a couple of days • Next, our team worked closely with Serafin to create the graphic look desired for the site and implement it Home page features animated graphics and strong photos and headlines.
Organization • SurfersNet assisted Serafin in organizing the issue information in a way that could expand with the site and site users could easily navigate through to find the appropriate information • Each time a new feature is added, SurfersNet re-evaluates the site structure and makes any necessary adjustments to keep the site flexible
Updateable Information • Home Page: SurfersNet added a photo and caption on the home page that Serafin can easily update any time by simply changing and uploading simple text and image files
Updateable Information • For daily news updates, SurfersNet created a flexible news section and worked on retainer to post news to both the news alerts page and the quick news box on the home page.
Updateable Information • When Students First started creating sub-Chapters, SurfersNet provided individual information pages for each chapter and gave the chapter chairperson the ability to update this page on their own by simply changing and uploading text files
Updateable Information • To help spotlight some of the more important information on the site, SurfersNet created a “Quick Links” pull-down box that could be easily updated through a simple text file.
Results • The Students First Foundation had an immediate Web presence at the onset of the issue • Flexibility of the site has allowed functionality and growth of the site • Updateable sections have allowed instant updates by both Serafin and the Chapter Chairpersons
