  1. SAFARI 2000 Data Activities at the ORNL DAAC Bob Cook1, Carroll Curtis1, Les Hook1, Tim Rhyne1, and Jeff Privette2 1Oak Ridge National Laboratory Oak Ridge, TN and 2NASA Goddard Space Flight Center Greenbelt, MD

  2. ORNL DAAC? Oak Ridge National Laboratory’s (ORNL) Distributed Active Archive Center (DAAC) www.daac.ornl.gov • archives and distributes data for terrestrial biogeochemistry and ecosystem dynamics, including field campaign data (BOREAS, LBA, SAFARI 2000)

  3. SAFARI 2000 OpenData Policy • Provide timely access to data while protecting the intellectual property rights of students and investigators, and giving credit to data originators • SAFARI 2000 participants are expected to register their metadata in Mercury • SAFARI 2000 data will be made available project participants as soon as possible and to the public by June 30, 2003 • Project data will be archived at the regional data center and at the ORNL DAAC or other DAAC (e.g., Langley or Goddard DAACs)

  4. SAFARI 2000 Data Archived Goddard DAAC • MODIS Airborne Simulator Data Langley DAAC • Air-MISR Data • MISR Data ORNL DAAC • Ames Airborne Sunphotometer Data • 25 regional SAFARI 2000 data sets • SAFARI 2000 CD #1

  5. SAFARI 2000 Activities at the ORNL DAAC Provide data support to SAFARI 2000 investigators, including the Mercury system • Mercury is a web-based metadata search and data retrieval system • 36 SAFARI 2000 data sets registered in Mercury as of September 30 • 9 by SAFARI 2000 data team • 27 by SAFARI 2000 investigators

Knjazihhin, Yuri McGill, Matthew Morisette, Jeffrey T. Privette, Jeffrey L. Revercomb, Hank E. Roberts, Gareth Thompson, Anne M. Ward, Darold SAFARI 2000 Investigators* whose data files are accessible via Mercury *First author only **Available to S2K Project participants

  8. SAFARI 2000 Mercury: Searching for DataJuly 1, 2001 – September 30, 2002 Number

  9. SAFARI 2000: Most Referred Data SetsJuly 1, 2001-September 30, 2002(180 data referrals, 68 users)

  10. Subset from 1200 x 1200 km to 7 x 7 km to relate to field work • Reformat from HDF image into ASCII file of pixel values and QA flags, expanding as data are collected Posting MODIS ASCII Subsets at the ORNL DAAC • MODIS Products: • Veg Index • fPAR / LAI • Future (2003) • PSN / NPP • NBAR and • Surface • Reflectance • Surface • Temperature • LC/LCC Mongu Tower Site, 2001

  11. MODIS ASCII Subsets in Southern Africa Current Sites (Collection 3 Processing) • Skukuza Tower (South Africa) • Mongu Tower (Zambia) Additional Sites (Collection 4 Processing; early 2003) • Maun Main Tower (Botswana) • Maun Floodplain Tower (Botswana) • Tshane (Botswana) • Okwa River Crossing (Botswana) • Pandamatenga (Botswana) Collection 4 backward processing will include historical MODIS data collected from as far back as March 2000

  12. Next steps: Based on the SAFARI 2000 Data Policy • SAFARI 2000 Investigators need to register their data sets in Mercury and make the metadata searchable • Regional investigators who initiated their registration at Siavonga • Contributors to the four special issues • Contributors to the SAFARI 2000 Synthesis Workshop • By June 30, 2003, all S2K investigators need to make their data available to the public • S2K Leadership needs to decide which data sets should be archived at NASA DAACs and at the regional data center • Data sets selected have to be thoroughly documented (understandable 20 years from now)
