  1. Mr. Gifford’s 5th Grade Math Class Lesson #22 Variables and Expressions

  2. Variables and expressions are the beginnings of a new area of math for a 5th graders called Algebra. Algebra is a type of mathematical puzzle. Algebra includes patterns that you must solve to find an answer.

  3. A variable is a letter or symbol that represents an unknown amount that can vary or change. Symbols that are commonly used. X, A, B, Y, or any letter to represent a word.

  4. When you use a Variable along with a number you create an Algebraic Expression. This is a mathematical phrase involving variables, numbers, and operations.

  5. Here are some examples of these Algebraic Expressions There are NO equal signs in these expressions A number plus or added to 4 N + 4 A number minus or less 4 N -4

  6. 4 times a number 4w A number divided by 4 N / 4 or N 4

  7. Here are some questions that involve these algebraic expressions Twice the number of people This means 2 times the amount of people that are ALREADY there. 2 (for twice)p(for people) 2p

  8. $7 less than the current price P (for the price) $7(price less than) P-7

  9. 8 more gumballs the Javier has J (for Javier)+8(for the number of more gumballs J+8

  10. A number of students divided into 2 teams. S(for the students) / 2 (number of teams) S/2 or S 2

  11. Now let’s practice with some of these expressions. Subtract a number from 10 10 - N

  12. The product of 9 and a Number 9n Add 6 to a number 6 + N

  13. 6 divided by a Number 6 / N Now let’s try to make written expressions from a number expression.

  14. Make an Expression for N + 9. 9 more than a Number Make an Expression for X / 12 A number divided by 12

  15. Make an expression for y - 4 A number minus 4 Make an expression for 8m 8 times a number
