  3. Pre-questions • What’s the function of the final drive ? • The final drive is the main component in the transmission line to reduce speed and increase the torque. In the mean time it can change the direction of torque when the motor is longitudinal. Diagram of car showing clutch location

  4. Pre-questions • How does the final drive work ? • The final drive depends on the gear wheel with less number of teeth driving the other one with more teeth to achieve the retardment. And the use of conical gear also can change the direction of torque .

  5. Pre-questions • How many types does the final drive have? What are they ? • According to the number of sub-gear pairs which take part in the retardment, the final drive can be divided into single-stage and two-stage type. • According to the number of sub-files of the transmission ratio, the final drive can be divided into single speed and two-speed type. • According to the sub-structure of reduction gear pairs, the final drive can be divided into the cylindrical gear type, the bevel gear type , the hypoid gear type and so on.

Read the following passage carefully and fill in the blanks with the proper form of the given words. • The final drive is used to (transfer) the engine power from the (drive shaft ) to the rear (wheels ). In addition to transferring power, it must cause the power to make a 90° (turn ) between the drive shaft and wheels, and provide the (correct ) axle ratio. There is no choice of final drive ratios that gives the “best” performance at all (speeds ). The gear ratio is (proportional) to ratio of the gear diameters and proportional to the ratio of gear speeds. The gear teeth of (driven ) gear are more than the (driving) gear. There are many types of gear shape, but the type of the driving and the driven must be consistent.
