  4. Map (Desert in brown) 2

  5. Animal Life • The harsh conditions make it difficult for animals to thrive. • There are many animals but the one that stands out is the camel because its so well adapted. • Other animals that survive here must have tough skin, and ability to move in the sand. 3

  7. Animal Life Questions • What do animals need to survive? • Name 2 animals that live in a desert 3b

  8. Plant Life • The little water in deserts make it difficult for plants to survive. • Most plants have a deep root system which goes down to the soil to obtain water. • The most abundant plant would be the cactus, which can grow up to 50 feet. 4

  9. Plant Life (Continued) • Cactus, Joshua Tree, Jumping Cholla 4a

  10. Plant Life Questions • What’s the most abundant plant in a desert? • How do plants get water in the desert? 4b

  11. Physical Landscape • Deserts are mostly sand and mountains on the surface, and soil is deeply underground. • Very dry climate with little to no rain. • Some oasis’s have water on the surface due to water from underground being pushed up. 5

  12. Physical Landscape (Continued) • Sand Dunes, Mountains, Oasis, 5a

  13. Physical Landscape Questions • What are deserts mostly made out of? • Are deserts dry or wet? 5b

  14. Human Influences • Riding off road vehicles, the tracks kill off vegetation • Sand viper which hides in sand can be an unsuspecting victim. • The tracks also scare the sand for decades. 6

  15. Human Influences (Continued) 6a

  16. Human Influence (Questions) • Name the animal to watch out for when riding in desert • How long do tracks stay for in the sand? 6b

  17. Weather • Average Precipitation is 10 inches • Average Temperature is 68-77 F 7

  18. Warnings • Harsh environment is hard to survive in without supplies. • Global warming increases droughts. • Higher temperatures may produce wildfires. • Small changes in temperature or precipitation can have an impact on plants and animals. • The endangered animals are antelope and gazelle in Sahara desert. 8

  19. Globally Important • One sixth of the worlds population and one fifth of the earths landmass is the desert. • Plants and animals benefit humans, domesticated camels are good for pack animals and desert plants like the Date are an important food source in North Africa and Middle East. 9

  20. Glossary • Thrive- to grow or develop successfully • Abundant- a great number • Oasis- an area in the desert where there's water and plants • Decade- 10 years • Global Warming- the recent increase in the world's temperature 10
