  3. Introduction • Desert: dry area: an area of land, usually in very hot climates, that consists only of sand, gravel, or rock with little or no vegetation, little to none water. Also the desert has a variety of animals and plants that live there such as snakes, lizards, camels etc. Deserts cover more than one fifth of Earths land. 1

  5. Animal Life • The harsh conditions make it difficult for animals to thrive. • There are many animals but the one that stands out is the camel because its so well adapted. • Other animals that survive here must have tough skin, and ability to move in the sand. 3

  8. Plant Life • The little water in deserts make it difficult for plants to survive. • Most plants have a deep root system which goes down to the soil to obtain water. • The most abundant plant would be the cactus, which can grow up to 50 feet. 4

  11. Physical Landscape • Deserts are mostly sand and mountains on the surface, and soil is deeply underground. • Very dry climate with little to no rain. • Some oasis’s have water on the surface due to water from underground being pushed up. 5

  14. Human Influences • Riding off road vehicles, the tracks kill off vegetation • Sand viper which hides in sand can be an unsuspecting victim. • The tracks also scare the sand for decades. 6

  17. Weather • Average Precipitation is 10 inches • Average Temperature is 68-77 F 7

Warnings • Harsh environment is hard to survive in without supplies. • Global warming increases droughts. • Higher temperatures may produce wildfires. • Small changes in temperature or precipitation can have an impact on plants and animals. • The endangered animals are antelope and gazelle in Sahara desert. 8

  19. Globally Important • One sixth of the worlds population and one fifth of the earths landmass is the desert. • Plants and animals benefit humans, domesticated camels are good for pack animals and desert plants like the Date are an important food source in North Africa and Middle East. 9
