DNS Address Assignment for Roaming Mobile Devices: Standards Update

This paper discusses the issue of how roaming mobile devices using Simple IP or Mobile IP protocols can obtain DNS server addresses from their home network. Solutions have been integrated into IS-835-B Addendum, with examples provided for both scenarios. For Simple IP, PDSN can fetch DNS server addresses using a new 3GPP2 VSA in RADIUS Access Accept. In the case of Mobile IP, HA can send the DNS server address to the MS via a new NVSE in the Mobile IP Registration Reply.

Standards Status • The problem is how does a roaming MS (using Simple IP or Mobile IP) obtain DNS server address from its home network. • Solutions have been adopted into IS-835-B Addendum. • Example scenarios: • For Simple IP, PDSN may obtain DNS server address from the home network via a new 3GPP2 VSA in the RADIUS Access Accept. Then, the PDSN conveys the DNS server address to the MS via IPCP. • For Mobile IP, HA may send to the MS a DNS server address in a new NVSE of the Mobile IP Registration Reply.
