The Cyber Crime Threat • Growing in volume and sophistication: • 2m cyber crimes in 2016 • More professional, harder to detect, faster • 46% of all businesses experienced a breach in 2016 • Businesses holding personal customer data more likely to be breached • Only 26% are reporting these crimes • Cyber security still isn’t a priority: • 27% SMEs believe they are ‘too small’ to be of interest to cyber criminals • Consumers are increasingly nervous: • 83% are concerned about which businesses have access to their data • 58% said that a breach would discourage them from using a business • Consequences of a cyber breach can be huge and long lasting: • Average loss for small firms is £1,380 • 89% small businesses victims saw an impact on their reputation (brand damage, loss of future earnings, customer trust) OFFICIAL

Cyber Aware’s Advice • Install the latest software and app updates; they contain vital security updates which help protect your device from viruses and hackers • Use a strong, separate password for your email account; hackers can use your email to access many of your personal accounts • Use three random words or numbers to create a strong password / 2FA / password managers • Always back-up your most important data • Secure your tablet or smartphone with a screen lock • Never click on suspicious links or attachments • Don’t use public Wi-Fi to transfer sensitive information • Fake websites • Source: National Cyber Security Centre (CGHQ), Law Enforcement & HMG • Flexible to the evolving threat • Simple • Solution - focused OFFICIAL
