Strategies for Cultivating ‘Educacion’ • Enable students to interact with you outside of the classroom. • Create ways of achieving personalized relationships with students and giving students individual attention. “Remember to be ‘chosen’ is to become valued.” • Engage parents and the community in the education of Hispanic Children • Employ a project/inquiry approach which allows for assignments to be done in ‘teams,’ for topics to be selected, for writing to be done collaboratively and for data to be collected, interviews to be conducted with adults, family and community members etc. • Maintain high expectations supported by challenging and relevant material • How do high expectations , relevant and challenging material imply caring? • Cultivate a discourse in the classroom wherein students discuss their dreams and goals for the future • Why does the “future” imply caring?

Strategies for Cultivating ‘Educacion’ cont. • Regard parents as being in need of information about their children’s school performance-and therefore communicate with parents. • Accepted students’ experiences, yet encouraged students to consider the consequences of their actions, as part of helping students to learn from their past actions and to avoid repeating them in the future. • Be prepared to meet students’ basic needs.

Qualities of Ineffective Teachers with Hispanic Students • Do not know their students personally or their life situations. • Do not provide Hispanic students with individualized attention • Use surface level impressions to explain/or justify failure. • Do not directly address students’ questions or requests for help and will send student somewhere else for help. • Are not aggressive in engaging students and keeping them connected to the material or to themselves as teachers. • Regard parents as the ‘problem’ because they don’t care. • The dominant mode of learning in the classroom is individualistic, sedentary, controlled by others and abstract. • What is the difference between individualized and individualistic?
