  1. GSC: PolyU Pre-Challenge to groom student entrepreneurs With the aim of grooming the business minds of students and encouraging them to explore their entrepreneurial dreams, the GSC: PolyU Pre-Challenge was held on 16 April. A total of 63 multi-disciplinary teams, comprised of 137 students, signed up for the contest. Under the guidance and supervision of academic advisors as well as a series of training workshops and coaching sessions offered by SAO, each team formulated a business plan related to products, management and/ or services. After competitive selection, 29 qualifying teams were chosen to enter Round II, and three finalist teams with the highest scores were invited to compete once again in the Final Round on 16 April. During the Final Round, the three teams presented their business proposals to the panel of high-profile judges to compete for the Gold, Platinum and Diamond Award of Innovation.Judges were impressed by the contesting students’ collective talents, and initiatives that put their passion and knowledge into practice, adding real value to our community while opening limitless opportunities for their own development. Two music enthusiasts, Francis To and Ramon Yuen both studying double majors of ISE & AF, were the champions, winning the Diamond Award of Innovation for a project titled EasyMusic. The judges appraised EasyMusic because it helps people create beautiful music, even those who do not necessarily have much musical knowledge, from composing the melody to decorating it with accompaniment and writing lyrics without difficulties. Upon winning the Diamond Award of Innovation, Francis and Ramon will represent Hong Kong by participating in a world-wide business plan competition, the Global Student Challenge (GSC), which will be held in Hong Kong in June. Four students from AF, LMS & MM won a Platinum Award of Innovation for their idea Roadtouch Pal, which is a first-of-its-kind and user-friendly in-car fingerprint alcohol sensor, aimed at curbing drunk driving. Last but not least, three students from ISE proposed a Greenvolution won a Gold Award of Innovation. The 3rd generation recycling machine – Mr. Bin brings along a new recycling concept, offering both Real and Virtual incentives to recyclers. All prizes were awarded based on the following five criteria: innovation and creative concept, commercial viability and market potential, technology novelty and uniqueness, soundness of business/ development plan and presentation skills. Diamond, Platinum and Gold awards winning teams received trophies and a cash prize of $25,000, $20,000 and $15,000 respectively, while teams that won Excellence Awards and Merit Awards received cash prizes of $5,000 and $3,000 respectively.
