  2. 2nd Grade Writing Assessment B Today we will begin working on a writing assessment that all 2nd graders will complete. This is your chance to demonstrate your skills as a writer.

  3. Your assignment: • You will watch a video and read an article. The video and article each tell about a different place that classes can visit for a field trip. • You will be writing your opinion about which place you think would be best for a class field trip and why.

  4. Steps you will follow: In order to help you plan and write about which place you think would be best for a class field trip, you will do all of the following: • Watch a video and answer questions. • Read an article and answer questions. • Plan, write, and revise your writing.

  5. 2nd Grade Writing Assessment B • Clear EVERYTHING off your desk except: • Pencil • Response Sheet 1 • (teacher will hand this out) • Write your name at the top of your sheet.

  6. Session 1 Watch a video and answer questions. Call students together at the carpet.

  7. Video: The Kansas City Zoo 5 minutes

  8. Answer Questions 20 minutes • Why would the Kansas City Zoo be a good place for a class field trip? Support your answer using details from the video. • Describe what the video says and shows about what you can see and do at the zoo. Use details from the video in your description. • The narrator in the video states, “We’re taking you to Australia, Africa, the tropics and everywhere in between.” What does this mean? Your teacher will collect your responses when the time is up.

  9. Session 2 Read an article and answer questions. Students will sit at their desks.

  11. 2nd Grade Writing Assessment B • Clear EVERYTHING off your desk except: • Pencil • Shatto Dairy Company article • (Teacher will hand this out) • Write your name at the top of your sheet.

  12. Directions • Carefully read the Shatto Milk Company article. • You can underline and make notes in your article. • You will have about 30 minutes to complete the reading and answer the questions. • You may begin. Your teacher will hand out response sheets as you are reading.

  13. Answer Questions 30 minutes • Why would the Shatto Milk Company be a good place for a class field trip? Support your answer using details from the article. • Describe what the article says about what you can see and do at the Shatto Milk Company. Use details from the article in your description. • The author writes, “reducing waste in local landfills.” What does this mean? Your teacher will collect your responses when the time is up.

  14. Session 3 Plan, write, and revise your writing. Students will sit at their desks.

  16. Your Writing Imagine that you get to help the class decide which place would be best for a class field trip. Which place do you think is best for a class field trip and why? Be sure to use information that you learned from watching the video and reading the text in your writing.

  17. You may begin 60 minutes • Decide your opinion. • Use your notes to plan your writing. • Put your thinking all together in your writing. • Read your writing to yourself. • Revise and edit your writing as needed to make it your personal best!
