  1. Theodor Herzl 1860 - 1904 Theodor Herzl at the age of 12 (1872) in Budapest. He writes a program for building the Panama Canal (which is finished in 1905). An imaginative and creative child, he is greatly impressed by Jules Verne’s books.

  2. Theodor Herzl 1860 - 1904 Herzl at the age of 14 (1874) in Budapest. At his school he initiates a club for young literature lovers called “We” and appoints himself “President”.

  3. Theodor Herzl 1860 - 1904 Theodor Herzl at the age of 18 (1878) in Vienna. He is a law student. (Later he will go on to receive his doctorate in law.) Herzl joins the German national student fraternity “Albia”. He chooses the fraternity name of “Tancred”, a hero of the first Crusade which conquered Jerusalem. At a commemorative evening for Richard Wagner the anti-Semitism of the fraternity is revealed and Herzl decides to resign from the fraternity with a sharply worded letter.

  4. Theodor Herzl 1860 - 1904 Herzl aged 30, (1890) in Vienna. He is a writer and dramatist. Later he will write the drama “Das neue Ghetto” – “The New Ghetto”, concerning the Jewish question. This successful play is performed on stage.

  5. Theodor Herzl (1860 – 1904) Theodor Herzl, aged 36 (1895). He is sent to Paris as a correspondent for the famous Viennese newspaper “Neue Freie Presse” – “New Free Press”. He is present at the degrading trial of the assimilated Jewish officer Alfred Dreyfus.

  10. 3rd July 1904. Herzl dies at the young age of 44. He is given a grand funeral and thousands participate in an emotional fare well.

  11. 14th May 1948. Declaration of the State of Israel. Herzl’s dream comes true. A sovereign Jewish homeland is established.

  12. Herzl’ remains are transferred from Vienna to Jerusalem and laid to rest on Mount Herzl, named for him.
