How can Internet content be filtered? • Black lists- contains a list of sites to block • White lists- contains a list of sites to allow • Keyword filters- scans content for banned keywords • False positives- blocking useful sites • False negatives- allowing content that should be blocked • Search engine filtering- search engines exclude certain topics from their search results page

What are the ethical and social impacts of Internet filtering? • When content is blocked, perhaps users should be able to request access • Accidental blocking of a business’s website • Mission creep- more and more content is added to a filter, going further than its original intentions • Determining what content is appropriate and what is not

What are the technologies used for electronic and online voting? • Electronic voting systems- votes are cast and counted using a computerized system • Online voting/internet voting- votes are cast from somewhere other than an election station • OMR- (optical mark recognition) counts ballot slips • Public Network Direct Recording Electronic system- allows voting from any internet device

  5. What are the social issues related to electronic and online voting? • Secrecy/security • Authenticity of the voter • Integrity of the results • Equality of access

  6. How can information technology used by the military? • Simulators- recreates real life situations • Virtual environments- realistic missions based on real military operations • Virtual reality- uses headsets that remove the view of the world around them • Tactile feedback- attaches to the body to simulate an injury • Mixed reality- combination of physical training and technology
