  2. Definition of Extended School Year (ESY) • Special education and related services that are provided to a student with a disability beyond the normal school year. • ESY is an IEP team decision

  3. ESY is an IEP Team Decision The determination rationale is the following Without continued supports and services the student will experience significant loss of skill(s) or knowledge that will jeopardize the educational benefits accrued during the school year.

  4. What’s the difference? Summer School ESY Services ESY is an IEP team decision Instruction focused on IEP Goals The IEP Team determines initiation, duration and frequency of ESY Services • Students including those with disabilities have the option to attend. • Instruction focused on meeting Florida Standards for their grade level. • The school district determines the length of summer school sessions

  5. Who MAY be considered? • ESY Must be considered for all students with disabilities • ESY May Not be limited by disability category or severity • Related services must also be considered for ESY

  6. Criteria to Consider • Regression/Recoupment • Critical Point of Instruction • Emerging skills • Nature and severity of disability • Interfering Behaviors • Special Circumstances

  7. ESY is Based on Data • ALL relevant regression and/or predictive data aligned to the IEP goals is used when making ESY service decisions.

  8. IEP teams need to remember • ESY services are not intended to meet newly developed IEP goals. • ESY services can be provided in a variety of settings. • Family-planned community or home activities may be sufficient.

  9. ESY May look like… • take home learning activities • phone or online consult • computer check out • curriculum check out • ­­­­ school site instruction • community site instruction • other

  10. ESY Is Not… • Child Care • Respite Care • Intended to maximize educational opportunity or potential growth • Based on specific area of disability, level of service or type of classroom placement • A longer school day

  11. ESY is NOT “One Size Fits All” • ESY is NOT specific dates and times for ALL students. Example: June 15- July 30 • Service Delivery may take on a variety of forms as identified by the IEP team.
