    1. GETTING STARTED: Open your web Brower. Type the web address www.wardenhs.owotw.com that links you to OdysseyWare Online. It should look something like this:

    2. LOGIN: Type in your user name and password to get to your schoolwork. Your teacher can help you if you forget how to log in.

    3. HOME PAGE: Logging in gets you to your Home Page. Here you’ll see Today’s Message, the subjects you are studying, and a menu of options (left side of screen). The menu stays visible regardless of where you are in the program.

    4. START WORK: To start working, choose a subject and click on it. The program will take you directly to the assignment you’re supposed to work on.

    5. SCHOOLWORK: OdysseyWare courses cover science, math, history/geography, and language arts. Each course is made up of units (usually 10 for full-year courses). Units break down into four kinds of assignments: lessons, projects, quizzes, and tests. Lessons. The lessons cover all the important ideas, concepts, and skills you are supposed to learn in the course. Working through a lesson requires you to read carefully, learn vocabulary, view multimedia and work problems. Multimedia. As you read through your lessons you'll find a variety of multimedia items to click on. Look for words colored blue, pictures with little video recorders, speaker symbols, and directions to "click here." When your mouse pointer turns into a little hand, click to see what happens. Some presentations you click on will play on their own (videos), but for other presentations you will have to click through at your own pace (slide shows).

    6. Daily Lessons Each subject is divided into units, lessons, quizzes, tests, and projects. A subject can have 5-11 units (most have 10 units). The units are then divided into a number of lessons and projects. Each unit also has 2-5 quizzes and a final unit test. The lessons always start off with text information for you to read followed by problems to be answered. As you read through the lessons you will find a variety of multimedia items to click on. Look for pictures with little video recorders, speaker symbols, and directions to "click here." When the mouse pointer turns into a little hand, click to see what happens. Some presentations will play on their own (videos), but for other presentations you will have to click through at your own pace (slide shows).

    7. Problems. When you finish reading a lesson, the first problem scrolls up from the bottom of the screen. Answer the problem and scroll down to the next one. Problem types include multiple choice, matching, true/false, fill-in-the-blank, and click and place. You can change your answer at any point prior to clicking on the Finish Assignment button at the end of the activity. After completing the last problem, again click anywhere on the page to send your answer. Then click on the Finish Assignment button. This tells the program to grade the assignment.

    8. Connection to Server Lost If at any time the Connection window pops-up, you must click the link to attempt to reconnect BEFORE you answer another question or click the Finish Assignment button. If the workstation is not connected to the application server through the internet, the application may not receive your last submission and possibly score the assignment improperly.

    9. Question Types Matching Type the number associated with the words in the first column into the box in the second column to match the definitions or descriptions in the second column. Continue matching the numbers until you have matched all the words in column one with the descriptions or phrases in column two.

    10. True/False Select between TRUE and FALSE. You can toggle back and forth as often as necessary until you are satisfied with your answer

    11. Multiple Choice Multiple Choice Buttons You can select only one answer in multiple choice problems. When one round button is selected, all the others are deselected. You may select and deselect a choice any number of times. Be careful -sometimes the best answer is "all of the above" or "none of the above."

    12. Multiple Select Similar to multiple choice problems, selections allow students to choose none, one, or more than one answers. Click on as many boxes as apply to the problem. You may select and deselect a choice any number of times before continuing to the next question.

    13. Multiple Choice Text A blue colored box with a drop down arrow indicates a multiple choice text question. Possible answers are already typed in the drop down menu. Click on the arrow then click on the selection the menu to select it. The problem is completed when the correct answer is displayed.

    14. Text Entry (Fill-in-the-Blank) OdysseyWare employs an intelligent scripting system that allows for a variety of correct answers. Students apply analytical problem solving rather than rote memorization. OdysseyWare even checks for spelling and can be set to subtract percentage points for misspelled words.

    15. Many math problems use a type of fill-in-the-blank question. However, because the answer box is often only a single-digit wide, it can be confusing if you need to change your answer. To change your answer, first delete your current answer. Then type in your new answer. Tip: Use scratch paper to solve the math problem. Then transfer your final answer to the answer boxes.

    16. Sometimes the text entry boxes have words or sentences already typed in them. These problems generally require the student to correct something in that word or sentence. In these problems, grading is very exact, right down to punctuation, spelling, and capitalization.

    17. Paragraphs You will type your responses to "short answer" questions in paragraph boxes. When finished, click on the Save button located below the paragraph window. These paragraphs are then sent to the teacher for grading. Paragraph boxes are not included in the pass threshold loop. This means that when you click Save, it will not be scored by the application. Teachers will not be alerted to grade paragraphs until the entire lesson is completed.

    18. Click and Place (Drag and Drop) Used to label maps and diagrams or to set up algebraic equations, click and place graphics allow students to "pick up" items from a menu, and place them into position on a graphic. The menu is located below the main graphic. Click once on the selected item then click again to place the item in the correct position. You can click multiple times until you hit a placement target. Placing a new item onto an already placed item will replace the old. Menu items can be used more than once. To clear the entire problem, click on the Start Over button. To clear a single item in the problem, click on the Eraser icon, then click again on the item to be erased.

    19. After you complete the last problem, click anywhere on the page to send your last answer to the server. When you have answered all the questions, click the Finish Assignment button for the application to score your work.

    20. Click Try Again to review the lesson materials and answer the questions again. You do not have to re answer the questions you got correct.

    21. If you are having trouble with a question, you can leave a message and move on. Click on the Help button located near the top of the question box.

    22. Type in a message to your teacher explaining the trouble you are having; then, click on "Save Help."

    23. This problem will then be sent to the teacher and you can continue on. This is especially helpful if you are stuck in the Pass Threshold loop and unable to move along to the next assignment. Messages In addition to problem notes, each assignment (lesson, quiz, test, or project) has its own message box at the top of the page. Your teacher can leave notes for you here. You can also exchange messages with your teacher using the Messages button located on the menu.

    24. Projects. These teacher-graded assignments include science experiments, reports, or off-computer activities. Projects are assigned in the order listed in the Unit table of contents. Some may be optional.

    25. Once in a project, you can exit, move on to other work, and come back later. Once you click on the Finish Assignment button, your project is sent to your teacher. Generally, you will be required to type your project in a large text box at the bottom of the project page. Be sure to click on the Save button before leaving the page in order to save your work. You must also save your work before you click on the Finish Assignment button; otherwise your work will NOT be saved. Tip: You may want to use a word processor to complete projects. Copy and paste the completed text from the word processor into the answer window. Click the Save button, then send the project to your teacher for grading. Quizzes and Tests. Most units have between two and five quizzes and a final unit test. OdysseyWare provides two quiz/test taking options. Your teacher decides which kind to give you. Standard. In a standard quiz or test, you can scroll through all the questions and answer them in order, or skip around. You can change your answers as many times as you need until you are satisfied. When you are ready to submit your quiz or test for grading, click the Finish Assignment button. Once you leave the quiz or test, you cannot go back in. All unanswered questions will be graded as "0" points. Open Book. Open Book quizzes and tests work just like Standard quizzes and tests except that you can exit and enter the quiz or test as many times as you need to. No grading is done until you click the Finish Assignment button.

    26. GRADING: Your teacher grades all paragraph answers and projects. Your teacher may also change the grades on any computer-graded problems. Your grades are not final until your teacher has gone through all your work. Grades. The grades for each completed lesson are displayed on the unit detail screen. The unit overview screen displays the average for each unit. The main subjects screen shows the cumulative grade for each course.

    27. Work Sent Back Sometimes you will find yourself automatically put back into a lesson that you thought you had finished! Your teacher, who is following behind you, grading and answering your messages, has changed something and wants you to see it. You might have to redo some work. Check in the message box to see what your teacher wants you to do. If there is no message, redo the problem, and go on.

    28. STUDY TIPS: Studying for Quizzes and Tests Study before you take a quiz or test. Even if you scored 100% on all your lessons, you still need to study. Click on My courses to access a course in Review Menu. There, you will be able to see each unit's table of contents and the grades for each of the lessons. Click on a lesson to see the grades for each of the problems. Note: You can only go into the lessons you have finished. You can't change the answers. Auto Find. While in any lesson, quiz, test, or project in Review Mode, you can use “Ctrl + F” (hold down the Control Key and F key at the same time) to activate your browser’s “Find” function. Type a word in the utilities box to find a topic you want to study. All instances of the word or phrase you typed will be highlighted for you. Note-taking. Another way you can study is to take notes from the lessons. Write down the important ideas, patterns, and formulas. Keep and review the scratch paper you used to work out math problems. Find a method of note-taking that works for you. Your teacher can help you with this. "Pre-test." If you don't mind doing work over again, ask your teacher to clear a lesson for you to redo. Study first, and then see if you can go through the lesson and answer all the questions without looking at the text for answers. You can also ask your teacher to set up a "Study Student" so you can do the lessons over again without deleting your real work. Review. After completing a lesson, go back over it in Review Mode. Skim over the text and look at your answers to the problems. If there was something you didn't quite understand, go back over it. Ask your teacher to review it with you. Practice. Make sure you practice each new skill you learn. If you are studying Spanish, practice your pronunciation. If you are learning Algebra, do extra problems. Many of the web links in OdysseyWare will lead you to web sites that will give you extra practice.
