  1. Luke’s Gospel The Parable of the Prodigal son

  2. The Parable of the Prodigal Son • Key Idea • There are key historical aspects contained in the ‘Parable of the Prodigal Son’ that help us better understand the story

  3. The Parable of the Prodigal Son • Key aspects of this story • Shameful for the family that the younger son left home. The younger son abandoned his obligation to care for his father. • By asking for his part in the inheritance he is saying to the father- ‘I wish you were dead’. • Jews were forbidden to even touch pigs. So to be feeding pigs for a job, would be shameful. • Dignified figures in the ancient world never ran. • After all that the son had done, the father still lavishes his son with love and forgiveness, which is the point of the story.

  4. The Parable of the Prodigal Son • God is like the Father- Jesus story gives us a picture of what God’s love and forgiveness is like. • This is the model that Jesus took in his own ministry of welcoming outcasts and sinners • The Older Brother • “This son of yours”- wont even call him his brother. • “I have never disobeyed a single command of yours” • Jesus uses this story to criticize his opponents. • The Pharisees would boast about never disobeying a command of the law, yet they were blind to God’s forgiveness and mercy.

  5. The Parable of the Prodigal Son • The Older Brother • The Pharisees were so focused on the wickedness of the the tax collectors and sinners they couldn’t see the healing and transformation Jesus brought about. • Perhaps this story also points to the difficulties that the early church had between Jew and Gentiles all sharing in God’s mercy.

  6. The Parable of the Prodigal Son • Write 1 page answering this question • What was the meaning of this passage to the original audience?
