  3. Why have we amended the Constitution? The 2 Basic Reasons for (many of) the 27 Amendments to the Constitution. • #1 – WritingRIGHTS- granting FREEDOMS for the people and providing PROTECTIONS from government. • #2 – RightingWRONGS- fixing PROBLEMS with the STRUCTURE or FUNCTIONS of the Constitution.

Categorizing/Classifying Amendments • At the same time, the subjects of the amendments can be classified into a few broad categories; this can help us make generalizations about the types of amendments that have been added to the Constitution. • Categories: • Freedoms/Rights • Protections from Government • Elections • Voting • Miscellaneous
