  3. The “E” Step So far we have learned the first three steps of the Prediction Strategy, CLUE. C – Check for clues (title, author, visuals, reading clues) L – Link to Prior Knowledge What do the clues suggest about the topic? What do I already know about the topic? U-Unlock a prediction “I predict that…” E – Examine the Reading (This is where we actually start reading)

  4. The “E” Step Fill in the outline of the prediction strategy. To beging the “E” step, you read part of the selection. While you read, you do several other things. Firs, you will check for reading clues. In other words, ask yourself, ‘By reaidng the selection, what new information did I find? Did I see new clues about what is going to happen next? Did I find any clues that tell me what the characters in the story are really like?” Second, you willl link thos clues to your prior knowkledge, Third, based on the new clues and my prior knowledge, what prediction can I make?

  5. The “E” Step – Just do CLU again Yep! You just do the CLU steps again. The only thing that has changed is the text you are reading. The primary type of clue you are looking for now is reading clues – clues you find by reading the text. Then, you will link tose new clues to your prior knowledge and make another prediction. Le me show you how.

C – Check for clues Title – Fueling Up on Fumes Author – Diane Betts Visuals – picture of a car in front of a gas station Reading Clues – organic kitchen and garden waste L – Link to Prior Knowledge The clues suggest that the story is going to be about using organic materials as gasoline for cars. I already know that gasoline can be made from vegetable oil, but I have never heard of making gas from kitchen waste. U – Uncover prediction “I predict that the story will be about using organic waste as gasoline for cars.” E – Start Reading: Do the C, L, and U steps again as I read. I am mainly looking for reading clues. The E Step will tell me if I am right and let me make a new prediction.

E – Examine the Reading C – Garbage is being turned into fuel – this is called biogas – renewable Biogas is made when organic materials decay ( rot) When organic materials rot, it breaks down into carbon dioxide and methane gas. Methane gas is natural but harmful to the environment – scientist can contain it 4. Sweden is the biggest producer, Europe and Asia are also using it. L: The clues suggest that several countries are already using the biogas. I wonder when we will start using it? I know the United States usually do not show that much concern for the environment and renewable gas. P: I predict……
