  5. Strategies for Coping with these challenges… Create mechanisms to revisit your vision Share the burden Find someone with whom you can discuss the realities of leadership Make sure you have personal time

  6. Human service leaders not only need to help individuals in crisis, but they need to guide families and communities to a self sufficient future. When leaders meet the demands they need to improve their capacity to deliver an effective array of services. Human Service Leaders MustMeet Demands

  7. Strategies for Human Service Leaders • For leaders to get the proper strategies they need to take incremental steps. • They need to adopt organizational innovations that will improve the collaboration and communication through technology

  8. Three Strategies to Follow… • An organization will become more efficient at delivering outcomes. It will be able to have these desired outcomes with a reduced amount of resources. • An organization will become more efficient at reaching outcomes. • The most important things is it can respond in new ways to deliver what use to be unattainable outcomes

Human Service Leaders Need to Facilitate Open Communication • One of the hardest things leaders face is finding ways to become approachable and in that process not lose authority • Leaders need to make the path of communication open where everyone is free to discuss problems and progress. • Problems can arise if employees feel their boss is distant, and mistakes could be avoided if they felt comfortable talking with each other.

  10. A Leader Must be Reflective to be Resilient • Reflect on how you can get uncommitted teammates into supporters. • Building a resilient organization requires that you begin with reflection, and to encourage your team to be dreamers, flexible and creative.

  11. A Human Service Leader will Construct a Diverse Team • Although it can cause team disagreements, a leader should create a diverse team. • This type of team can bring a wealth of skills and ideas to the organization.

A Good Diverse Team Leader Will… • Develop an atmosphere that is safe for all employees. • Actively seek information from people from a variety of backgrounds and cultures. • Create a team spirit where every member fells a part of. • Include others that differ from you in informal gatherings.

  13. A Good Leader Will Keep it Ethical • A leader needs to guide their team in their ethics • A leader needs to make sure that the team is behaving congruently with the ethical rules that is set up for the team.

Ethical Issues for Leaders • Leaders must develop an ethical framework that is built around the agency's missions, value statements and ethical code. • Leaders Enhance and promote a moral vision and ethical action. The Articulation and promotion of organizational values and ethical standards is thus a core aspect of leadership.

  15. Challenges for Women Leaders In Human Service • Women leaders find themselves trying to fit into a man’s world. • Most women do not feel they have to act like male leaders to make it.

  16. Top 3 Challenges for Women Leaders • Delegating-Women still think they need to do it all themselves. • Voice-some women still have a difficult time finding their voice in the business world. • Guilt-some women feel it not okay to ask for help, but is important to ask and to give help.

  17. Effective Leaders in Human Services use a Pattern of Behaviors Leadership challenges will vary by organization.The most common challenges have to do with three types of behaviors. • Task Oriented Behaviors • Relations Oriented Behaviors • Change oriented Behaviors

  18. Task Oriented Behaviors Leaders will… • Assign work to groups or individuals • Clarify what results are expected • Make sure problems are resolved • Set specific goals • Explain rules and policies • Plan short term operations and monitor them

Relations Oriented Behaviors Leaders will… • Provide support when given a difficult task. • Build relationships • Provide mentoring when needed. • Have ceremonies, stories or rituals to build a solid team • Allow people to determine the best way to solve issues. • Recognize accomplishments • Get competent new members for the team.

Change Oriented Behaviors Leaders will… • Monitor the external environment • Study competitors to get ideas for improvement • Encourage people to view problems in a different way • Encourage major changes • Experiment with new approaches for achieving goals. • Interpret events to explain the need for change.

  21. What People Look for and Admire in a Leader: Honesty-leaders need to be ethical truthful and principled. Competency- A Leader will show the ability to get things done. Inspiration-Admirable leaders are energetic, positive, and enthusiastic. Forward looking- a good leader has a vision and sense of direction for the organization.

  23. About the Summit • The human service field is entering an era of disruption • Factors such healthcare reform, the application process and client screening will drive a surge of new service demands • Disruption will bring challenges for human service leaders.

Four Overarching Strategies: • Forging dynamic relationships with service providers, develop partners and community stakeholders to create innovation • Deploying predictive analytic systems and social media tools to anticipate the needs of customers. • Design innovative policy models that break down silos and build up service delivery. • Adapt leadership and best practices in change management to ensure stockholder engagement.
