The agreements in action: Yom-Kippur war Anwar el-Sadat president of Egypt decided to end their relationship with the Soviet Union and start a new one with the US When Nixon and Kissinger ignored him, Sadat decided to get their attention by launching a surprise attack across the Suez canal on the US ally Israel What does the Yom-Kippur war reveal about Detente? According to the basic principles agreement how should the two superpowers react? USA supplied Israel with arms. Rebuffed a demand for Brezhnev for a jointly enforced cease fire Kissinger then personally negiated an end to the hostilities, gaining gratitude in both Egypt and Israel
