  1. APStatisticsThursday, 29 August 2013 • OBJECTIVETSW examine types of data, types of variables, and representations of data. • FORMS DUE (only if they are completed & signed) • Information Sheet and Acknowledgement Sheet (wire basket) • T-shirts have been reduced in price to $7.00. • If you have already paid, I will refund $2.00. • I will take T-Shirt orders right after the bell rings.

  2. Activity: Hiring Discrimination?(Total time: 20 minutes) • Partner with a person close to you. • If there are an odd number of people, ONE group may have 3 people. • Get a WS and a deck of cards. • Read and complete the WS – make sure you follow directions! • Turn in to the wire basket.

  3. AP StatisticsSec. 1.4: Types of Data and Some Simple Graphical Displays

  4. Variable Any characteristic whose value may change from one individual to another

  5. Data Observations on a single variable or simultaneous observations on two or more variables

  6. Types of variables

  7. Categorical variable • Qualitative • Identifies basic differentiating characteristics of the population

  8. Numerical variable • Quantitative • Observations or measurements take on numerical values • Makes sense to average these values • Two types - discrete & continuous

  9. Discrete (numerical) • Listableset of values • Usually counts of items

  10. Continuous (numerical) • Data that can take on any value in the domain of the variable • Usually measurements of something

  11. Classification by the number of variables • Univariate - Data that describes a single characteristic of the population • Bivariate - Data that describes two characteristics of the population • Multivariate - Data that describes more than two characteristics (beyond the scope of this course

  12. gender age hair color smoker systolic blood pressure number of girls in class categorical numerical categorical categorical numerical numerical Identify the following variables as categorical or numerical:

  13. Tomorrow’s Quiz: • Everything up to now WILL be on tomorrow’s quiz. • Everything that follows will NOT be on tomorrow’s quiz, but it will be tested.

  14. Frequency Distribution • A table that displays frequencies for each of the possible values of a variable.

  15. Frequency Distribution Example • SPORT # OF SPORTS INJURIES • Touch Football 38 • Soccer 24 • Basketball 19 • Baseball / Softball 11 • Jogging / Running 11 • Bicycling 11 • Volleyball 17 • Other 47 178

  16. Relative Frequency Distribution • A table that displays relative frequencies (individual tallies divided by the total number) for each of the possible values of a variable.

  17. Relative Frequency Distribution Example SPORTRELFREQ • Touch Football 21%(38/178) • Soccer 13% (24/178) • Basketball 11% (19/178) • Baseball / Softball 6% (11/178) • Jogging / Running 6% (11/178) • Bicycling 6% (11/178) • Volleyball 10% (17/178) • Other 26%(47/178)

  18. Bar Chart • A graph of a frequency distribution of categorical data. • Each category is represented by a bar or rectangle. • The area of each bar is proportional to the corresponding frequency or relative frequency.

  19. Bar Chart Example

  20. Bar ChartExample (from a Relative Frequency Distribution)

  21. Dot Plot • A picture of numerical data in which each observation is represented by a dot on or above a horizontal measurement.

  22. Assignment • Sec. 1.4: pp. 18-19 (1.8, 1.10, 1.11, 1.13, and 1.15) • This is due on Tuesday, 03 September 2013. Assignments due Friday (30 August 2013): • Newspaper article. • Sec. 1.3: pp. 9-10(1.1 – 1.7)
