  3. Our Expectations Were Just As Lofty As Our Agenda • over 30 letters of support • over 25 goals and objectives • two counties • three staff members 3

  4. We Tried To Please Everyone And Do Everything Increase student access to healthier foods by increasing access to breakfast and salad bars and by eliminating the sale of unhealthy goods. Increase physical education at NYC schools thru in-class physical education and opening of play streets. Expand Wellness Council implementation in elementary-level target area schools and facilitate the assessment and development of school health policies using the School Health Index or similar in target area schools. 4

  5. Took A Step Back Developed a Communities of Practice Survey (CoP) CoP, is a term that describes a group of people who share an interest, a craft, and/or a profession. Why? We needed to know how our new coalition will be able to gain interest and leverage support from existing CoPs. In addition to interest and level of commitment to our coalition the survey asked respondents to identify participation in other similar CoPs. 5

Targeted 88 current and potential partners • 34 completed the survey Out of 34 respondents • 65% belonged to at least one similar CoP • 24% belonged to more than one similar CoP • Bronx Health Reach in 4 • The Bronx River Alliance in 3 • Mount Sinai Communities IMPACT Diabetes Center in 3. 6

  12. Renewed Focus • The combined findings of the CoP survey and the results of the CHANGE TOOL have: • Developed a streamlined the Community Action Plan • Established an efficient communication plan • Produced collaborative project agreements with other CoP coalitions 12

  13. Lessons Learned • Every coalition needs to be willing to negotiate and compromise • Its ok to go backwards • Know and respect your audience • Never assume you have support • Less is more 13
