  2. Habitat for Humanity Windsor-Essex Who We Are Established in 1994, Habitat for Humanity Windsor-Essex is a non-profit, registered charity. We welcome all people without discrimination to join us as we build simple, decent, affordable homes in partnership with low-income families. 100% of all administrative and fundraising costs are paid for by the operation of our social enterprise, the ReStore. Habitat ReStoressell quality new and used donated household and building materials. Habitat for Humanity Windsor-Essex, an affiliate of Habitat for Humanity Canada, works with corporate, and individual donors and volunteers to give families a hand up, not a hand out.Habitat for Humanity is founded on the belief that decent, affordable housing is a basic human right. We partner with low-income families who: • currently live in substandard housing • are willing to volunteer 500 hours of “sweat equity” • will repay a zero-down payment, interest-free mortgage over an average 25 years Mortgage payments from Habitat homeowners go directly into a trust to build more Habitat homes. Our model empowers families to help families. When you make a donation to Habitat for Humanity Windsor-Essex, every dollar of your gift goes directly towards building homes with families in need. Proceeds from our ReStore cover all of our administrative costs. Vision & Mission Vision Habitat for Humanity Windsor-Essex is a non-profit organization working for a world where everyone has a safe and decent place to live.Mission Our mission is to mobilize volunteers and community partners in building affordable housing and promoting homeownership as a means to breaking the cycle of poverty.

  3. Annual General Meeting – 2017 April 18, 2018

  4. This past year was one of extreme growth and excitement for the organization. This included many significant milestones. After an extensive and comprehensive Board Retreat – we know that we will significantly drive housing starts by 2021, serving a minimum of 12 families in that time frame. We currently have a land bank that will cover us through 2021, and we are looking for sites that will accommodate multi-unit builds. Optimizing our capacity and resources is a high priority for HFHWE – that being said, in 2018 we became a certified Living Wage Employer, we added a new Employee Assistance Program, and are implementing the new Habitat Canada Health & Safety protocols. In order to foster a culture of leadership, we have ensured that all board executive positions are filled through 2020, all twelve board positions are filled with a roster of prospective board incumbents having been vetted, and we are very actively involved with Habitat Canada’s Ontario Caucus. We have worked to ignite action and raise brand profile through increased partnerships and engagement – and are working toward continually increasing sustainable funding in order to serve more families. This was evidenced through two Ontario Trillium Foundation grants totaling $798,000 awarded to expand our ReStore programs. The Board is proud of all that has been accomplished over the past year. However, more than that, we are grateful for the opportunity to further the work of Habitat to achieve A World In Which EVERYONE HAS A SAFE PLACE TO LIVE We are humbled by the leadership, inspiration, passion, and support of the staff, volunteers, donors, customers, sponsors, partners, members, partner families, and of course, our families and friends who support the work we strive to achieve. Thank you, Mary Margaret Parent & Edward Link HFHWE Chair & Co-Chair Message from the Board of Directors

  6. Message from Fiona CoughlinExecutive Director • Dear Members and Partners, • As you are aware, Habitat for Humanity Windsor-Essex is embarking on our 25th year. I am so proud to be a part of an organization with a legacy of building homes and hope in the city and county that I love. • Our theme for this anniversary year is “Celebrating the Past, Building the Future.” We are proud to walk in the footsteps of leaders who set out decades ago with a vision. We hope that as you reflect on where we are today that you are also proud of where we are going; but we must first celebrate 2018 – and what a year it was! • Once again we achieved over One Million Dollars in store sales at the Windsor ReStore which is allowing us to expand our build programs and train almost 200 students in retail and skilled trades; • Through partnerships with Matthew House, Welcome Centre, Hiatus House, and the DWCC we have been able to bring a furniture bank program back to the city of Windsor; • Due to the success of our metal salvage program, which diverted another 400 tons of metal from landfill last year, we received $723,000 in funding to expand this program; and • Most importantly, the Beauchamp and Labelle families are in their new Habitat Homes in Leamington and Windsor. • The future holds many more Home Dedications, larger ReStores, and partnership projects designed to renew entire neighborhoods. Our board of directors has unanimously agreed to increase our capacity to build affordable homes, and to work collaboratively to include neighbourhood revitalization as a strategy. • I do not take my role as Executive Director lightly. I am aware that we are building on a foundation that you as leaders poured many years ago. As we continue to build through our 25th year we will work diligently to honour your legacy. • Fiona Coughlin, CFRE

  8. Message from Pamela Breault Director of Operations Oops, WE did it again! I have always been proud to be part of this incredible team and wonderful organization that is recognized not only locally, but around the world as a leader in poverty reduction, social innovation, community building and social justice. However, what I thought might be difficult to replicate in 2018 (after a banner year in 2017), demonstrated that hard work, faith in the process, openness to change, strong leadership, and unwavering support from our community can make our shared vision a reality. 2018 was a spectacular year. For the sixth consecutive year, we realized increases across the board. Community engagement increased, donations increased, partnerships increased, mortgage revenues increased, and housing starts increased. We were fortunate enough to be able to grow our collaboration efforts with Matthew House, hosted multiple cooperative education integration days, and employed six summer students. We grew our fleet and capital assets, acquired property to help build Ford City, we refused to allow a series of break-ins slow us down, and were very excited to receive the keys to our brand new 22,000 square foot facility (scheduled to open May 25). Most importantly, however, we housed two wonderful families, broke ground in preparation for a third, and established partnerships with our future homeowners of Builds 66 and 67 – scheduled to break ground this summer. While all of that was happening, our volunteer hours rose again to 17,182 in 2018, a significant increase over 2017. These hours represent $463,914 worth of labour given to us in kind from members of our community. This is our core as a grass roots organization and is essential to the growth and stability of Habitat for Humanity Windsor-Essex. It would not possible and we could not experience the number of successes that we have experienced without our dedicated family of Volunteers, Board of Directors, Membership, the Family Services Committee, Build Committee, Fundraising Committee and Finance Committee. I would be remiss not to mention the thousands of individual donors who contribute to the success of our ReStore as well. In 2018, our receipted donations totaled more than $887,000 – that is an increase of more than $162,000 over 2017. The amount of support from the community, Ontario Trillium Foundation, the Canada Summer Jobs program, the Ministry of Housing and Children’s Services, Habitat Canada, in addition to our many corporate, team and food sponsors is steadily increasing, which allows us to serve more families. Caesars Windsor, Libro Credit Union, Reaume Chevrolet, The Home Depot, Bell Media, and Blackburn Radio Group have been steadfast in their support of our vision – a community and a world where everyone has a safe, decent, affordable place to live. Lastly, I would like to give special thanks to all of the people behind the scenes. The ReStore Associates, administrative staff, volunteers and cooperative education students that come in every day – without fail – continually striving to achieve HFHWE’s vision. They deserve special recognition. Having the opportunity to work so closely with our current and future Partner Families as we help them to build upon their dreams of affordable homeownership is truly a very humbling and gratifying experience; and I look forward to the opportunity that I have been afforded to continue building upon our Affiliate’s success and serving more families together with our community. My sincerest thank you for another incredible year of growth.

  9. Build # 631640 Janette St., WindsorThe Labelle Family Habitat for Humanity Windsor-Essex was honoured and humbled to partner with the Labelle Family for the 63rd Build Project, one of two completed projects in 2018. This build was a unique opportunity for Habitat for Humanity to partner with a family in emergent housing need. When Holly applied to the Habitat for Humanity Affordable Homeownership Program, we knew that this family needed to get out of their current, unsafe and unsustainable living situation, and fast. However, emergency housing is not part of Habitat’s mandate, and we did not have available land to build upon in the City of Windsor at that particular time. As often happens, though - the stars somehow aligned. What could have been a devastating situation for one of our current Habitat Homeowners needing to make the heart-wrenching decision to sell the Habitat home that she had proudly and lovingly taken care of (and built equity in) for over eleven years, became a win-win-win situation for all parties involved. The original homeowner was able to sell her beloved home back to Habitat for Humanity Windsor-Essex, thereby allowing the property to be renovated and finished for its future Homeowner – Holly Labelle and her daughters. All in a 4 ½ week timeline. On July 1, 2018 – Holly and her girls Alaura and Alaina received the keys to their gorgeous new home. They were planning on “camping out” in their home with sleeping bags, folding chairs, and a deck of cards until they could get out to purchase some furniture. Little did the family know, that the generosity of our community, and the team at Coulter’s Furniture (The Room Interior Design) furnished the home with 3 bedrooms sets, living room, dining room, and accessories for their two bathrooms. For the first time in 10 years, Holly, Alaina, and Alaura were able to sleep in their very own beds, in their very own safe and affordable home. Congratulations, Holly and girls, on your brand new home, and your exciting new life!

  11. Build # 6464 Askew St., LeamingtonThe Beauchamp Family Habitat for Humanity Windsor-Essex was honoured and humbled to partner with the Beauchamp Family for the 64th Build Project, the second of two completed projects in 2018. This build was a unique opportunity for Habitat for Humanity to partner with the Municipality of Leamington to demolish a vacant, derelict property – rebuilding a new Habitat home, resulting in the positive transformation of the neighbourhood, as well as the living situation for the Beauchamp Family. The Ground-breaking and Dedication Ceremonies were so incredibly beautiful – with smudging ceremonies performed by the Caldwell First Nation; which was very personal to the Beauchamp Family’s cultural background and spirituality. Habitat for Humanity Windsor-Essex was once again blessed to be able to partner with our First Nation Community on our second (of hopefully many) Indigenous Build Projects. As always, the community rallied around Habitat for Humanity Windsor-Essex and the Beauchamp Family as we built this home together. It was truly a Community Project – with every single team build day sold out. It was an exciting time for Kelley’s two youngest children as well, as they were able to watch the daily progress of their new home as they walked past the build site to and from school every day. Congratulations, Kelley, Matt, Savannah, and Keegan on what is just the beginning of so many beautiful new family memories to be made in your very own brand new home!

  16. Message from Rick Young Regional ReStore Manager 2018 - What Another Great Year! Can you say ‘Back to Back’? The Windsor Restore has had their second million dollar year. With only 13 stores across Canada going over a million, Windsor is now playing with the big boys. The total revenue in Windsor was $1,021,471 and Leamingtoncontributed another $161,430 for an affiliate total of $1,182,901. The best part about this is that the future looks even brighter. The team fought hard to maintain sales levels even through the 4 months of road construction directly in front of our Windsor ReStore. We also recycled more steel than ever before, and recovered more kitchens than previous years. This all helped Habitat Windsor-Essex do our part to preserve the earth for the next generation, while serving more families. Some incredible highlights for 2018 were as follows: • Second year in a row we were able to hit a million dollars in sales • Re-opening of the furniture bank under the Habitat umbrella (with the help of a grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation) • Secured a major grant to advance our recycling business (with which we were able to purchase a bin truck with 6 bins and a flatbed) • Received the keys to our beautiful new facility on Edinborough Looking to the future, we will close our Devon Drive location and open our new Restore at 57 Edinborough(Grand Opening Celebration May 25). This is something that a few years ago did not look to be possible. I would like thank our great volunteers, staff, and board members for the outstanding commitment they have given us again this year. This team is committed to our cause of serving more families. Two stone cutters were asked what they were doing The first said he was building a wall; The second said “I am on a Team that is building a Cathedral”

  21. Waste Diversion Program • 2018 was another spectacular year for the Waste Diversion Program. Considered a “Pilot Project” throughout the Habitat Federation, this program has not ceased to deliver – due largely in part to the incredible staff and volunteers running the program. • Not only has the program consistently delivered on its targets for funding through the Ontario Trillium Foundation, but we have more than tripled the deliverables and outcomes that were originally anticipated. In May of 2017, the original Trillium Grant was successfully closed, and in November 2018, HFHWE was successful in obtaining an additional $723,000 in funding in the form of an OTF Grow Grant, to successfully grow and monitor our National Award Winning Waste Diversion Program. • 2018 in Waste Diversion Numbers: • 1335 appliances diverted from area landfills (274 of these were refrigeration units) • Metal recycling in total was $49,340.35 beating the target of $43,000 - an increase of $6,340.35 over 2017 • Steel recycling generated $25,019.32 • Non-ferrous (copper, aluminum etc.) generated $11,391.54 • Recycling Partners contributed $7,602.05 to steel waste recycling • 822,376 lbs (411 tons) of metal and appliances were diverted from area landfills through our recycling partner TSM • 122 kitchens were carefully removed from customers’ homes by our salvage crew, generating our best sales figures for kitchen sales in our ReStores to date

  25. The FIRST Annual Rick Young Excellence in Safety Award The Rick Young Excellence in Safety Award recognizes an individual or individuals who exemplify safety excellence through their contributions to the “Safety First” culture that Habitat for Humanity Windsor Essex strives for. In the case of a near catastrophic accident at the Windsor ReStore on April 2, 2018 – Mark and Angie quickly and efficiently responded by putting into use their Emergency First Aid and CPR training to care for a colleague while waiting for First Responders to arrive to the scene of the accident. Without their quick thinking and ability to control the scene and the situation, the outcome might have been very different. The Safety Culture at Habitat for Humanity Windsor-Essex is paramount for all of our volunteers, staff, donors, vendors, and customers. Mark and Angie are remarkable ambassadors of this culture – and we are so grateful for their heroic actions. Mark Casagrande Waste Diversion Coordinator Angie Jeremic Customer Service Coodinator

  26. Giving Tuesday at Canadian Blood Services On Giving Tuesday (November 27, 2018) our team decided the best way to celebrate was to have our Habitat-ers invade the Blood Donor Clinic by sponsoring it from 3pm-7pm at the Canadian Blood Services location on Grand Marais in Windsor. On April 2, 2018, one of our team members suffered a near fatal accident. If it were not for our emergency First Aid trained staff, First Responders, and Blood Donors – there is a very real possibility that Rick may not be here with us today. The blood clinic went through a lot of snacks and juice boxes that day – as there was standing room only in the clinic – but for us, there was no better way to celebrate those who give blood than to bring out an entire team to Give Thanks and Give Back on Giving Tuesday.
