  1. What is Density??? How many of you have ever gone on a trip somewhere and had to pack a suitcase? You pack it so full, it’s hard to close. It’s soooooo heavy, you can hardly pick it up.

  2. When you go on a trip, do you ever buy anything? Where do you put it on the way home??? Yep, you guessed it, your suitcase (you know, the one that was already so full you could hardly carry it)!!!

  3. Will your suitcase be heavier on the way home? Did the mass of the suitcase change? Did the volume of the suitcase change? Is the suitcase more or less dense? It is more dense because you put more mass into the same volume.

  4. Money, Money, Money…..

  5. Density Triangle

  6. Density Problems….(do these with me on your whiteboard) • What is the density of a pebble with a mass of 25 grams and a volume of 5 mL? Mass= Volume= Mass/Volume= Answer = 25g 5 mL 25g/ 5 mL 5 g/mL

  7. Density Problems….(do these with me on your whiteboard) • What is the density of a rectangular piece of wood with a mass of 80 grams and measures 2 cm by 5 cm by 4 cm? Mass= Volume= Mass/Volume= Answer = 80g 40 cm3 80g/ 40 cm3 2 g/cm3

  8. Density Problems….(do these with me on your whiteboard) • I threw a plastic ball in the pool for my dog to fetch. The mass of the ball was 125 grams. What must the volume of the pool be to have a density of 5g/mL? Mass= Density= Mass/Density= Answer = 125g 5 mL 125g/5mL 25 g/mL

  9. Sharing Line • Line up from the shortest person in class to the tallest person with no talking. • Fold the line • This is your partner for your lab.

  10. Ticket out the Door… • On a sticky note, draw the Density triangle. • Give me a self-evaluation of your level of knowledge on Density. • Place your sticky note on the correct row of the poster as you leave the room.
