  1. Itze-LeibSchmuilowsky(Louis Kahn) • Louis Kahn (B. 1901 - D. 1974) was a Philadelphia based architect who used innovative construction methods which resulted in monumental projects. Louis Kahn’s projects tended to be heavy buildings both visually and physically due to his material choices. Kahn spent his early years starting his architecture firm Atelier. Later in life Kahn spent his time teaching at Yale School of Architecture and University of Pennsylvania. • In 1966 Kahn was asked to design an art museum in Fort Worth, Texas. With natural light as a requested theme for the building, Louis Kahn created one of his most recognized projects, the Kimbell Art Museum. The Museum is a series of barrel vaults that are interrupted at their high points by a plane of plexiglass that allows light to reach a reflector. This reflector projects the light across the vaulted concrete ceiling and creates an evenly distributed illuminated atmosphere for art to be displayed. The vaulted concrete ceiling reaches a post tensioned concrete beam that rests on columns. These reinforced concrete columns support the roof and floor slab, eventually terminating on a footer. Opening in 1972, Kahn’s Kimbell Art Museum gained notoriety and recognition for its innovative roofing system.
