  1. Chronological Life of Christ Lesson 11: Capernaum Matthew 4:13-22, 8:14-17, Mark 1:16-34, Luke 4:31-41

  2. Prophecy But there shall be no gloom to her that was in anguish. In the former time he brought into contempt the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali; but in the latter time hath he made it glorious, by the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the nations. The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light: they that dwelt in the land of the shadow of death, upon them hath the light shined. Isaiah 9:1-2

  3. Gospel according to Jeff (page 12) And leaving Nazareth, he came down and dwelt in Capernaum, a city of Galilee, which is by the sea, in the borders of Zebulun and Naphtali: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken through Isaiah the prophet, saying, The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, Toward the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles, The people that sat in darkness Saw a great light, And to them that sat in the region and shadow of death, To them did light spring up. From that time began Jesus to preach, and to say, Repent ye; for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. And he was teaching them on the sabbath day: and they were astonished at his teaching; for his word was with authority. [Formed from Matthew 4:13-17 and Luke 4:31-32]

  8. Gospel according to Jeff (page 12) And walking and passing along by the sea of Galilee, he saw two brethren, Simon who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea; for they were fishers. And Jesus said unto them, Come ye after me, and I will make you to become fishers of men. And straightway they left the nets, and followed him. And going on a little further from thence he saw two other brethren, James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, who also were in the boat mending the nets with Zebedee their father; and he called them. And they straightway left their father in the boat with the hired servants, and went after him and followed him. [Formed from Matthew 4:18-22 and Mark 1:16-20]

  9. Calling Disciples Peter and Andrew James and John Story by itself (as told by Matthew and Mark) Does this story make sense? Story within the context of all the gospels (John) John 1:35-43 Knowing the history does this story make sense? Does anything about the story stick out to you? “with the hired servants” – Remember This

  10. Gospel according to Jeff (page 12) And they go into Capernaum; and straightway on the sabbath day he entered into the synagogue and taught. And they were astonished at his teaching: For he taught them as having authority, and not as the scribes. And straightway there was in their synagogue a man with a spirit of an unclean demon; and he cried out with a loud voice, saying, Ah! what have we to do with thee, Jesus thou Nazarene? art thou come to destroy us? I know thee who thou art, the Holy One of God. And Jesus rebuked him, saying, Hold thy peace, and come out of him…

  11. Gospel according to Jeff (page 12) …And when the demon had thrown him down in the midst, tearing him and crying with a loud voice, he came out of him, having done him no hurt. And amazement came upon all, and they spake and questioned among themselves, saying, What is this word? a new teaching! for with authority and power he commandeth the unclean spirits, and they come out and obey him. And straightway there went forth this report of him into every place of all the region of Galilee round about. [Formed from Mark 1:21-28 and Luke 4:33-37]

  12. Demon-possessed man Holy Ground

  13. Demon-possessed man Holy Ground Why does this demon-possessed man come? Why does he speak up? Demon possession in the Bible • Genesis-Malachi – 0 • Matthew-John – 30 (some of these are duplicate) • Acts – 2 • Romans-Revelation – 0 What’s up with that? Jesus has power over demons

  14. Gospel according to Jeff (page 12) And straightway, when he rose up and they were come out of the synagogue, they came and entered into the house of Simon and Andrew, with James and John. Now Simon's wife's mother lay sick and holden with a great fever; And when Jesus was come into Peter's house straightway they tell him of her: and he came, stood over her and took her by the hand, rebuked the fever, and raised her up; and the fever left her, and immediately she ministered unto them. [Formed from Matthew 8:14-15, Mark 1:29-31, and Luke 4:38-39]

  15. Peter’s Mother-in-law Peter’s house Additional evidence of some decent level of wealth She has a fever Jesus heals it “Immediately she ministered unto them” When Jesus heals it is instant, complete, and undisputable

  16. Gospel according to Jeff (page 12 & 13) And at even, when the sun was setting, and all the city was gathered together at the door, they brought them unto him: sick and demon-possessed. And them that were possessed with demons, he cast out the spirits with a word. Who were crying out, and saying, Thou art the Son of God. And He rebuking them, suffered not the demons to speak, because they knew him and that he was the Christ. And they that had any sick with divers diseases brought them unto him. And he laid his hands on every one of them, and healed them: 17 that it might be fulfilled which was spoken through Isaiah the prophet, saying: Himself took our infirmities, and bare our diseases. [Formed from Matthew 8:16-17, Mark 1:32-34, and Luke 4:40-41]

  17. Evening at Peter’s house Went to the synagogue and taught, cast out the demon, healed Peter’s mother-in-law, and did the evening miracles all on the same day The entire city gathers at the door Heals…for a while Do you think that Jesus is tired?
