Sustaining the Six BY A’Donna Anderson and Hasani Washington
Goal • The goal of this competition is to showcase the technical skills of the chapters in the region by applying their problem solving and analytical skills to real life situations.
Case Study • Tucson is having a problem with air quality levels and pollution as a result of high particulate levels from emissions. The city’s Engineers say one way to lower atmospheric pollution is to switch to clean, renewable energy. • Find out how many Solar Panels and Wind Turbines it would take to sustain a section of the grid containing one school, one supermarket, and 25 houses. • How many solar panels and wind turbines would you need to use per house, on the school, and on the supermarket to altogether take them off the grid. The combination that is the most cost efficient per load wins.
Statistics: Energy Consumption • Per Capita consumption of electricity in Arizona homes: 5,132 kWh per year • Average load of a supermarket: 50 kWh per year • Average load of a Mid-Sized (800,000 Sp Ft) School: 10kWh per year
Statistics: Sources • Small project Wind Turbine produces 10 kWh per year -Costs $35000 per home • Home Solar Panel produces 784 kWh per month -Costs $10400 per home
Presentation -Each chapter will two people come present the project. -You will have 5 minutes to discuss your combination and how you stayed within the budget. -Your findings must be in a PowerPoint.
Prizes Money Towards the Chapter • 1st Place: 1000 • 2nd Place: 500 • 3rdPlace: 300
