Impacts/Benefits

-200 community members trained and equipped in 4 livelihood enterprises

-2 Demonstration sites set up to provide technical support

Summary: The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organizations (UNESCO) undertook a project at Lake Bosomtwi, the largest natural lake in West Africa and Ghana’s only natural lake. It aimed at enhancing the sustainable management and conservation of the lake. A Rocha Ghana was mandated to implement conservation based alternate livelihood programmes..

  • Reduced pollution of lake
  • Improved livelihood of people

IPSI Activity cluster: Capacity building, On-the-Ground activities

Project Duration: 22 months

Budget $130,074.00

Opportunities

-Development of new project to improve waste management in the area

-Support more beneficiaries

Challenges:

-No initial baseline Information on livelihood alternatives

-Synchronisation with other implementing bodies not smooth sailing

Conclusion

-1000 community members trained and equipped in conservation based livelihood

-Micro Capital provided through micro-credit scheme

-Community enthusiasm to sustain the project

-Additional sources of funding for future upscaling
