Basic mini-talk rules • The first class activity on scheduled date • Handout (1 sheet) to class before talk starts • Mini-paper to instructor before talk starts • Maximum talk duration: 10 minutes • No unsolicited interruptions from audience
How to do mini-talk well • Answer the implicit (or explicit) question(s) in the mini-project topic. • Establish clear connection with planning and CE512. • Maximize utility of handout for notetakers. • Well-designed visual aids • Coordinate presentation visuals with h/o.
How to do mini-talk poorly • The visuals are hard to read. • The characters are too small • Too much information in slide, figure, or table. • Handout lacks speaker name, “CE512”, topic, date, and/or reference list. • Exceed time limit. • It seems like haven’t practiced your talk.
More about the summary sheet • Using both sides of one sheet is OK. • Choose most effective format: Text, outline, bullet list, figures, tables, copy of PPt. slides, or combination.
The era of PowerPoint • Bring back-up slides. • If another PowerPoint speaker follows you… • PowerPoint animation can be distracting
How to do mini-paper well • Header (no title page) with speaker name, “CE512”, topic, and date. • Answer the implicit (or explicit) question(s) in the mini-project topic. • Establish clear connection with planning and CE512. • The paper shows evidence of careful prep. • Cite refs in text (Karberg 2002)
How to do mini-paper poorly • Exceed 5 pages of text, double-spaced, font size at least 11-point. (Reference list, research steps, figures, and tables do not count toward the five pages.) • Don’t cite refs (careless? dishonest?) • Do not check spelling and readability. • Forget the research steps. • Do not number the pages. • Don’t write a mini-paper.
Mini-project results • Educational value • Good quality • Recent performance
