  2. Roopville Elementary School • Subject:Reading, Science, Math, Art, Music, Physical Education • Grade level: Pre-Kindergarten • Students: 22students • Demographics: • 95% White Americans • 5% African American • Length of observation: 21 ½ hours

  3. Project Findings • Instructor: • Assertive, gentle, fun, knowledgeable • Instruction: • Hands-on; direct instructions, room for error • Students: • Genuinely sweet/kind, curious learners, intrinsic motivated • Teacher-Student Interaction: • 3 small groups (high, medium, and low); simplifies instructions and repetitive; safe and warm environment; allows students to bring awareness of the world to the classroom.

  4. Project Findings… • Student-student Interactions: • thoughtful and caring, sharing • Classroom Management: • Verbal warnings and time to think • Assessments: • Arts and crafts, observation, curiosity, and participation • Curriculum: • District Standards

  5. Robert Sternberg’s Triarchic Theory • Triarchic theory of intelligence: • Practical ability- applying knowledge to everyday situations • adapting, shaping, and selecting an environment • Creative ability involves inventing, discovering, imaging, and supposing • solving unfamiliar information • Analytical ability- breaking ideas and products into their component parts, making judgments, evaluating, comparing and contrasting, and critiquing. • using knowledge and cognitive skills to solve problems and learn new information

  6. Practical Implication • I believe this theory is a great one when observing Pre-K because there is not a standard for them or requirements of what they HAVE to learn. The students are more encouraged to teach themselves about the world around them. Therefore, the teacher is more of a guidance to show all the unfamiliar/unknowns to the students.

  7. Applying Theory • For example, one student wondered why did a tree fall over when it stormed (practical ability). The paraprofessional did an experiment to fulfill the curiosity(creative ability). Once observing this experiment, he understood by connecting past experience such as he’s too heavy to be carried to why the tree fell (analytical ability). The tree only can endure so much force.
