  1. NAIA Competitive Cheer & Dance Webinar 2014 Season – Dance Division

  2. NAIA Dance Division • Competitive Cheer and Dance in the NAIA is changing to better mirror other, traditional team sports in the NAIA. To this end, there will be a regular season, consisting of at least 2 countable competitions and teams will have to compete in a Qualifying Competition in order to move to the National Invitational. • The purpose of this webinar is to familiarize coaches and judges with the scoring criteria and requirements for the NAIA Competitive Dance Division.

NAIA Dance Division • There will be 1 division in dance. • The routine must be a least 1:45 in length and cannot exceed 2:15. • There will be a minimum of 6 participants and a maximum of 16 participants. Males will be allowed to compete in the dance category. There will not be a coed division. Any males on the team must count in the total roster limit of 16. The format for the routine will be a combination routine consisting of jazz, pom, and hip hop styles.

  5. NAIA Dance Division There is a minimum requirement of 8 counts but not a time requirement. Here are the breakdowns and requirement: 6 – 8 counts: jazz 6 – 8 counts: hip hop 6 – 8 counts: pom

NAIA Dance Division Skill Requirements: 1 squad leap of your choice: any leap completed NOT using all members will not be counted for this requirement 1 squad turn sequence of your choice (must be at least 2 8-counts in length)* 1 squad pirouette sequence (single, double, triple, or quad) All leaps and turns can be at your skill level w/degree of difficult and execution being the main focus. Score sheets will reflect deductions and execution categories *Prep and completion can all be included in the counts.

NAIA Dance Division • Jazz Technique Category 5 - 7 points • Jazz movement and technique executed at a beginning level • Style is inconsistent throughout all team members (below average) 7 - 9 points • Jazz movement executed at the intermediate level with good technique • Style is mostly consistent throughout all team members (average) 9 - 10 points • Jazz movement executed at the advance level with strong technique • Style is consistent throughout all team members (above average)

NAIA Dance Division • Pom Technique Rubric 5 - 7 points • Pom motions performed at a slow pace executed at the beginning level • Lacking dynamics and control • Motions may be incomplete and unfinished (below average) 7 - 9 points • Pom motions performed at an average pace executed at the intermediate • Average use of dynamics and control • Has the ability to maintain accuracy and control when performing motions (average) 9 - 10 points • Pom motions performed at an up tempo pace executed at the advanced level • Strong dynamic motions supported by upper body strength and core control. • Incorporates innovative and creative variation and motion variety (above average)

NAIA Dance Division • Hip Hop Technique Rubric 5 - 7 points • Hip hop movement executed at the beginning level • Style is inconsistent throughout team members • Quality of execution and rhythm variations are below average 7 - 9 points • Hip hop movement executed at the intermediate level with good technique • Style is mostly consistent throughout all team members • Quality of execution and rhythm variations are average 9 - 10 points • Hip hop movement executed at the advanced level with strong technique • Style is consistent throughout all team members • Quality of execution and rhythm variations are above average

NAIA Dance Division • Choreography (As it related to Jazz, Pom & Hip Hop) 5 - 7 points • Beginning level choreography utilizing simple and possibly slower pace motions • Very limited use of floor work or full-body movement 7 - 9 points • Intermediate level choreography with more intricate use of motions and faster pace • May be lacking in use of dynamics 9 - 10 points • Advanced choreography utilizing intricate motions, skills and transitions, fast pace as well as full body movement and a variety of direction changes

NAIA Dance Division • Degree of Difficulty: Level and pace of performance 5 - 7 points • Overall incorporation/execution of beginning level style specific skills performed by the majority of • the team and executed at the beginning level with below average technique 7 - 9 points • Overall incorporation/execution of intermediate level style specific skills performed by the majority of • the team and executed at the intermediate level with average technique 9 - 10 points • Overall incorporation/execution of advanced level style specific skills performed by the majority of • the team and executed at the advanced level with above average technique

  14. NAIA Dance Division Turns as they relate to Degree of Difficulty • Beginning level turns (chainé, piqué turn, single pirouette, pencil turn, etc.) performed by the team; and/or intermediate level turns performed by less than a majority of the team executed with good technique; and/or intermediate level turns performed by a majority of the team with substandard technique • Intermediate level turns (double piqué, double pirouette, axle, etc.) performed by a majority of the team executed with good technique; and/or advanced level turns performed by less than a majority of the team executed with strong technique • Advanced level turns (triple/quad pirouette, fouetté, fouetté a la seconde, directional/turn variations, etc.) performed by a majority of the team executed with strong technique

  15. NAIA Dance Division Leaps as they relate to Degree of Difficulty • Beginning level leaps (hitch kick, grand jeté, stag, etc.) performed by the team; and/or intermediate level leaps performed by less than a majority of the team executed with good technique; and/or intermediate level leaps performed by a majority of the team with substandard technique • Intermediate level leaps (calypso, c-jump, jeté à la seconde, etc.) performed by a majority of the team executed with good technique; and/or advanced level leaps performed by less than a majority of the team executed with strong technique • Advanced level leaps (switch leap variations, leap combinations, etc.) performed by a majority of the team executed with strong technique

  16. NAIA Dance Division • Performance Impression – Showmanship, projection, performance 5 - 7 points • Beginning level of movement executed with substandard control • Strength of movement is lacking and style is somewhat inconsistent throughout all team members • Below average lines, flow, and continuity 7 - 9 points • Intermediate movement executed with good control • Style is mostly consistent throughout all team members with • Lines, flow, and continuity are average 9 - 10 points • Advanced movement executed with strong control • Style is consistent throughout all team members • Above average lines, flow, and continuity

NAIA Dance Division • Visuals and Staging - Music, transitions, flow, pace, creativity, spacing, etc. 5 - 7 points • Routine utilizes minimal formations and formations changes • Transitions are simple and lack continuity within the routine 7 - 9 points • Spacing is average, but not precise • More interesting formations and formation changes, but lacking in creativity 9 - 10 points • Spacing is precise • Routine utilizes a variety of transitions that are exciting and seamless.

  18. NAIA Dance Division • Uniformity – clean routine, mistakes not deductions, timing/sync 5 - 7 points • Beginning timing and synchronization of style • Memory mistakes causing the routine to appear less cohesive 7 - 9 points • Intermediate timing and synchronization of style • Few memory mistakes with good placement 9 - 10 points • Advanced timing and synchronization of style • Very precise placement
