  11. INTERPERSONAL RELATIONSHIPS • Relationships with athletes, parents, and assistant coaches • Cooperation with athletics office • Be a role model • Display “teachable moments” • Be enthusiastic • Develop staff • Be a good listener

  12. SPRING PRACTICE SCHEDULE • For the first 3-5 weeks of every spring season all teams practice indoors because of the weather. • Also have to contend with the Boys basketball team needing gym time to practice for the end of their season. • Have a Wood Gym and a Field house

  13. SPRING PRACTICE SCHEDULE • When developing schedule, had to use an outline that was previously in place because it had been given to coaches at the end of the 1st semester • Each day has 4 practice slots; 6am, 2:40pm, 4:40pm, and 6:40pm.

  14. SPRING PRACTICE SCHEDULE • All of the teams prefer the 2:40 slot in the field house because of its size • Every team makes an argument for why they should have the field house except volleyball. Volleyball can only be set up in the gym, but they want the 2:40 slot because it isn’t there fault the other sports can’t practice outside.

  15. SPRING PRACTICE SCHEDULE • Presented the schedule at the end of the meeting. • EXTREMELY TENSE SITUATION • The group went over every single practice slot to see if there were any changes that needed to be made.

  16. SPRING PRACTICE SCHEDULE • It was like a lottery every time an opening would come up. • At one point the AD and one of the head coaches had an argument because there was an early trade made. • Revised the schedule and emailed it to all coaches along with posting it on AD’s door.

  17. REFLECTION • The most difficult part of this task was the making of the schedule. • Partly because there was already an outline in place • Partly because no one seems to ever like their practice schedule.

  18. REFLECTION • The part of the meeting when we reviewed the practice schedule was far more intense than I ever anticipated.

  19. FOLLOW-UP • Things did not get better after the meeting. Because of the weather, very few teams were able to get outside and there were coaches arguing about who should have open spaces.

  20. FORMATIVE EVALUATION • Have coaches turn in all checklists • Keep track of teams that use their practice times • Keep track of any and all changes in schedule

  21. SUMMATIVE EVALUATION • Interview coaches to see how the practice schedule worked out and take comments on how it can be improved for the following year. • Follow up with each coach to make sure they performed all of their duties

  22. RESOURCES/BUDGET • This project did not require a budget, but the resources are game schedules and gym spaces

  23. STANDARDS • Standard 1: Vision • It is the job of the athletic director to make sure all of the athletic programs follow the standards that school expects its athletics to perform at. • Standard 2: Culture • The athletic director makes sure that we are giving students opportunities to participate at a high level

  24. STANDARDS • Standard 3: Management • A huge part of the job of an AD is to manage the athletic programs and facilities • Standard 4: Community • Often times high school athletics are a source of pride for communities.

  25. STANDARDS • Standard 5: Ethics • During this whole process, it was important to make sure that all teams received equal opportunities to be successful and that coaches performed ethically. • Standard 6: Larger Context • An athletic department is part of the entire high school which contributes to the schools environment.
