Universal Struggle with Comparisons

I’ve been (consciously) struggling with comparison since the day I started competitive gymnastics at the ripe age of 6. Mom knew best encouraging me in that sport, as I was never built for desk-sitting and my brain and body always craved novelty and excitement. Gymnastics and dance were truly the perfect outlet for me. But as time went on, and as much as I enjoyed monkeying around with my fellow junior athletes and saw myself getting stronger and improving every day, there was always someone out there, at school or at the gym, who had better back handsprings, looked better in her leotard or who had straighter hair that twisted perfectly into the classic competition-updo, while my frizzy locks made me look certifiable at times. As I got older and more competitive with my sport, I also became more competitive with myself- and others.
