General Structure of Meetings • Review the standards development process and its structure as outlined by the State Board of Education • Review working group norms • Review definitions of standards, curriculum, and instruction for consistency • Review completed work to date • Review goals for the day and commence work

  5. English Language Arts Progress and Topics of Discussion All work is in-progress until final adoption by the Arizona State Board of Education.

  6. English Language Arts -Progress to Date: • Reviewed and categorized all public comments • All public comments have been examined for consideration of potential refinement • Grade level discussions occur, as needed, to address K-12 topics • Current standards are being reviewed for clarity, measurability, and rigor.

  7. English Language Arts Topic: Phonics • K-5 Reading: Foundational Skills standards are being reviewed for clarity, measurability, and rigor. • Standards are being refined to improve the progression of phonics skills • Group discussions are addressing standards for the reading of cursive • K-5 Writing: Foundational Skills standards are being designed to address: • Sound-letter basics • Handwriting, including cursive writing • Spelling

English Language Arts Topic: Informational and Literary Text Percentages • Standards will address both informational and literary text • Percentages are not specified in the standards • Suggested percentage for the amount of literary and informational text a student encountered across the entire school day will be removed from the Introduction

English Language Arts Topic: Examples and Resources • Instructional approaches will not be specified in the standards • Standards are being rewritten for clarity, as needed • Embedded examples (including resources) are being reviewed for purpose: • Examples that provide clarification may be retained • Examples that dictate instructional strategies or specific curriculum are being removed

English Language Arts Topic: Developmentally Appropriate Standards • Standards are being reviewed for appropriate progression K-12 • Teacher experts across all grade levels are involved in decisions • Research/Publications that include information on how students learn ELA content and appropriate developmental age of learning are provided and used, as needed

Looking Ahead… • An English Language Arts standards draft will include: • Introduction to the standards • Standards by grade level, K-8 and 9-10/11-12 • Glossary • The creation of guidance documents follows the adoption of standards by the Arizona State Board of Education • The purpose of guidance documents is to assist with implementation of and communication about the content standards. Guidance documents may include: • timelines, crosswalks, parent documents, individual standard explanations and examples, professional development resources, etc.

Mathematics Topic: Fraction and Decimal Progression • 3-7 Fraction Progression: Current standards are being reviewed for clarity, measurability, and rigor. • Standards are being refined to improve the progression • Cross grade level discussions are improving the clarity of current and new standards • 3-7 Decimal Progression: Current standards are being reviewed for clarity, measurability, and rigor. • Standards are being refined to improve the progression • Cross grade level discussions are improving the clarity of current and new standards

Mathematics Topic: Algebra 1 and Algebra 2 Courses • Algebra 1 and Algebra 2: Common standards between both courses have been reviewed for clarity, measurability, and rigor. • Standards are being refined to eliminate common standards between both courses • Limits or the focus of each course are being determined between Algebra 1 and Algebra 2; which assist to clarify each course • Cross grade level discussions (Grade 8, Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2) are improving the clarity of the current standards

Math: Instructional Approaches • Instructional approaches/methods will not be specified in the standards • Examples that indicate instructional strategies are being removed • Embedded examples are being reviewed for purpose • Examples that provide clarification or limits to the standard may be retained or developed • Information in parenthesis will provide limitations or clarifications to the standard • In high school, the focus of the standard might be included within the standard

Math : Developmentally Appropriate Standards • Standards are being reviewed for appropriate progression K-12 • Teacher experts across all grade levels are involved in decisions • Research/Publications that include information on how students learn math content and appropriate developmental age of learning are provided and used, as needed
