Request letters and documentation from any medical professionals who treated you for health-related conditions caused by or aggravated by obesity. Your weight history, demonstrating a history of morbid obesity Your psychiatric history

  6. Gastric Bypass Procedures • Roux-en-Y gastric bypass • Laparoscopic adjustable gastric band • Sleeve gastrectomy • The bypass typically causes more weight loss, has a greater impact on diabetes, but it also has a greater risk associated with it, and so as a result, for people who need less of an operation, they need a less severe operation and a less effective operation, then the band is the way to go. • For people who need more of an operation, the bypass is the way to go, and maybe the sleeve gastrectomy is something in between.

  7. Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass • RNY gastric bypass is considered the gold-standard for bariatric surgery. • RNY gastric bypass is preformed greatly, second only to Lap-Band Surgery. • Quick Facts about Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass

  8. Star Jones Star Jones denied for years that she had underwent gastric bypass surgery, pointedly denying the rumors whenever asked. However, she changed her tune in a Glamour magazine interview in 2007, revealing that she had used the surgery to lose 160 pounds. Before After

  9. Sharon Osbourne Before surgery in 1999 After her surgery Sharon Osbourne had gastric bypass surgery in 1999 and lost over 100 pounds. Osbourne told People magazine last year that she was planning on reversing the surgery, and wanted to rely on psychotherapy to control her eating issues.

  10. Benefits of Laparoscopic Gastric Bypass Surgery • Loss of up to 80% excess body weight • Dramatic Weight-loss • Offers long-lasting weight loss results • Cure illnesses associated with obesity • No adjustments after surgery

  11. Disadvantages of Laparoscopic Gastric Bypass Surgery • Major Operation • Infections • Vitamin Deficiencies

  12. The LAP-BAND Adjustable Gastric Banding • Designed to induce weight-loss • Band placed around upper stomach • No bypassing • Produces a small pouch like stomach • Feeling of being full faster

  13. Benefits of LAP-BAND® Surgery • Dramatic weight loss • Loss of 70% excess body weight • Significant improvement in health • Reduction of health conditions related to morbid obesity

  14. Disadvantages of Lap Band • Less likely to maintain weight-loss • Vomiting • Blockage • Slippage • Wear/Tare on the band

  15. Sleeve Gastrectomy • Several surgeons worldwide have adopted the procedure and have offered it to low BMI and low risk patients as an alternative to laparoscopic banding of the stomach. • It generates weight loss by restricting the amount of food (and therefore calories) that can be eaten by removing 85% or more of the stomach without bypassing the intestines or causing any gastrointestinal malabsorption.  It is a purelyrestrictive operation.  It is currently indicated as an alternative to the Lap-Band® procedure for low weight individuals and as a safe option for higher weight individuals.

  16. Advantages of Laparoscopic Gastric Sleeve Resection • Laparoscopic gastric sleeve resection is simpler than gastric bypass surgery. Unlike gastric bypass, this procedure does not re-route the passage of food. • The procedure is less likely to cause complications such as the malabsorption of vitamins. • It allows for weight loss similar to what is experienced with gastric bypass surgery. • It allows for the resolution or cure of medically related illnesses that are secondary to obesity. • Most insurance companies cover this procedure

  17. Disadvantages of Laparoscopic Gastric Sleeve Resection • Although the procedure has achieved excellent results, it is the newest of the bariatric procedures and has a history of about three years. • Because a long, narrow tube is created out of the stomach, this creates resistance and limits the amount of food that a patient can swallow at any one sitting. • Rare complications can include blockages in the gastric sleeve or post-operative leaks from the staple line.
