  3. Some metrics • 800 flights/day at Gander (~50% use FANS 1/A services) • 2500+ aircraft worldwide • 30-80% total fleet • 350,000 data link messages Jan 08at Oakland center Air traffic data link service today • North Atlantic (NAT) • Automatic position reporting (FMC WPR & ADS-C) • Primary ATC communication (CPDLC) • Asia-Pacific + • Primary ATC communication (CPDLC) • Route conformance monitoring (ADS-C) • Reduced lateral/longitudinal separation • User preferred route (UPR) • Dynamic airborne reroute procedure (DARP) • Tailored arrival (TA) • Europe • Supplemental ATC comm (CPDLC)

  4. New since last year (1 of 2) • Oct 07 – Began standards work for data link operations into continental (domestic) airspace • Nov 07 – Re-started performance-based communications (PBC) & RCP implementation planning for NAT & globally • Dec 07 – Started tailored arrival (TA) trials at SFO • Jan 08 – Implemented operational CPDLC in North Atlantic • Feb 08 – Started Asia & South Pacific initiative to reduce emissions (ASPIRE) • Feb 08 – Completed requirements for flight data recorder for CPDLC (New rule, AC20160, & TSO C177) • Feb 08 – Started initiative on FANS 1/A over Iridium satellite • Apr 08 – Implemented RNP 10 routes in Western Atlantic track system (WATRS)

  5. New since last year (2 of 2) • Apr 08 – Adjusted Honolulu control facility boundary • Apr 08 – Started revisions to guidelines for design approval of aircraft data link systems (AC20140A) • May 08 – Started revision to operational authorization process for use of data link system (AC 120-70B) • May 08 – Started Atlantic interoperability initiative to reduce emissions (AIRE) • May 08 – Completed TA demo at MIA & ATL • Jun 08 – Concluded on solution to improve Inmarsat satellite services • Aug 08 – Started initiative on satellite voice for routine ATC communications & MEL dispatch relief of HF radio

  7. Current situation Integrated CNS/ATM systems FANS-1/A Oceanic & remote • Integrated CNS/ATM FMS package • Level C certification • Large equipped fleet ~2,500 • Used extensively in oceanic/remote airspace • Used in Australian continental airspace • Used in Maastricht’s (ATN-based) airspace Industry : Harmonized Procedures & SystemsIssues - Benefits for Air & Ground Continental ATN • Currently not integrated CPDLC • Currently level D certification • Small equipped fleet ~250 • Used only in Europe • Mandate will require upgrade
