  2. What is this? • Tiny ladder? • Spring from a pogo stick? • Fancy spaghetti? • What about this? • Did Ellie sneeze into a tube?

  3. What is DNA? • DNA stands for deoxyribonucleic acid • DNA is our body’s instruction manual that tells us how to grow and develop. • DNA is made up of letters • G, C, T, A • Almost every cell in your body has DNA.

  4. DNA • Long stretches of DNA make up genes. • Genes make different things for our body. • They are packaged up into chromosomes • Chromosomes are like a big recipe box for our bodies and DNA is the recipe!

  5. A DNA spelling test? • There are 3 billion letters in our DNA. • We have spell checkers that make sure we don’t make too many mistakes… • But sometimes mistakes happen and that can be good or bad.

  6. My job My job- Medical Geneticist • I am a doctor that specializes in people who have problems in their DNA. • I try to solve the mystery of what is wrong with them by looking at their DNA. • Knowing something is wrong with their DNA can help them, their families and their doctors take better care of them.

  7. My job- Medical Geneticist • I love my job because I get to help people of all ages. • I get to teach patients, their families and their doctors about genetics. • I can be a risk taker because I get to do research and discover new things… even new genes!

  8. Maybe I’ll find the gene for awesome second grade teachers…
