  1. UK Government Poised to Scale-up Biomethane Production ============================================================================================================================== The UK government is poised to set-up more biomethane plants to scale up green gas. These plants are aimed at heating around 2,30,000 homes. The government looks resolute to encourage its people to go green. The UK government is supported by the new Green Gas Levy which was first announced during 2020 budget. It may interest you to know that Green Gas Levy emphasizes on the fact that around 21.6 million tonnes of carbon-dioxide can be prevented from entering the atmosphere and will also provide a way cheaper fuel option for consumers. The government has launched a public consultation to scale up the production of renewable natural gas in coming years. The consultation will also set out proposals for the new levy to be introduced for licensed gas suppliers to fund biomethane injection into the gas ecosystem of the UK through Green Gas Support Scheme. Kwasi Kwarteng- Energy Minister, United Kingdom said that reaching net-zero refers to the reduction of emissions across the entire energy system. This also includes the way homes are

  2. heated. The initiative will help reach net-zero emission by 2050 and also take-off a considerable amount of load from the shoulders of UK tax payers. Besides, this can also help generate thousands of jobs in the long run. It is estimated that once fully deployed the biomethane industry can provide heating to more than 6.4 million homes whilst reducing about 6 percent of UK’s greenhouse gas emission by year 2030. Tens of thousands of jobs are also on the cards by the same year, said Charlotte Morton, chief executive of the Anaerobic Digestion and Biosources Association. Biogas companies in India also believe that biomethane seamlessly complements the existing gas grid which means it won’t cost a bomb to decarbonize the existing heating infrastructure of UK. The consultation launched on 22nd September, 2020 is designed to combat the climate change and help the country achieve its net-zero target in coming years. The UK government also announced Green Homes Grant worth £2 billion or €2.17 billion which will fund up the two-thirds of energy performance upgradation costs of the country. This clearly indicates that more than 600,000 homes in England will be positively impact as a result which also means households savings of upto £600 every year. Hope the post made for a good read.
