  1. GEDA Floated Empanelment Tender for Biogas Projects in 2020 GEDA- The Gujarat Energy Development Agency rolled out a tender to promote biogas projects in the state later last year. The tender was aimed at promoting large-sized biogas projects in the state. The tender rolled out in 2020 required bidders to deposit an amount of Rs. 1 lakh as the registration fee and the contract was not just confined to setting up a biogas plant. It also included running and maintenance of the plant for the next 10 years. Biogas did not fall under renewable sources until August 2020, when amendments were proposed in renewable purchase obligations (RPO). The contract said that the contractor will have to finish the project within 4 months. To be eligible for the contract, the bidder must have successfully executed at least 3 large-sized biogas projects. These projects must be of a minimum capacity of 25 m3/day. Besides, they must have successfully completed at least one project that’s Rs. 2 million worth in the past 3 years. The tender document also read that the authorized contractor will be eligible for the subsidy payment in 3 installments with the first and second installment covering 40 percent each while the last one covering the remaining 20 percent. The last installment would be paid post- commissioning and necessary training required to run and maintain the plant. ATMOS POWER 1

  2. Compressed Biogas as a Green Alternative The central government has been promoting the use of compressed biogas for many years now. Compressed biogas is being promoted as a green transport fuel alternative under the SATAT scheme which also enables better management of organic waste and biomass whilst reducing our reliance on oil import. In early 2020, the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) released a list of organizations that are technically qualified for independent evaluation study for- •The New National Biogas and Organic Manure Program •Biogas based Off-Grid Power Generation •Thermal Energy Applications Program (BPGTP) Over the years, we have seen the Indian government encouraging biogas to bio-cng plants to address energy security and environmental protection concerns. Agricultural residue, municipal solid waste, cattle dung, sugarcane press mud, and farm stubble have been detrimental to our environment and by promoting biogas, we can take a huge leap towards a greener future.
