The Complex Issues Surrounding Texas Annexation: Debt, Slavery, and Mexico

The annexation of Texas stirred deep divisions among American leaders in the 19th century, influenced by issues such as Texas's significant debt from the Revolution, the contentious slavery debate, and fraught relations with Mexico. Leaders hesitated to annex Texas due to financial concerns, fearing additional debt burdens. Moreover, Mexico threatened war over the annexation, complicating U.S. relations. The slavery issue divided the nation further, with Northern states opposing it and Southern states supporting it, thus making Texas's potential entry as a slave state a contentious argument in Congress.
