Overview of SRC Funding Opportunities for Computer Science Research at the University of Utah

The Semiconductor Research Corporation (SRC), an evolution of MCC in Austin, represents a collaborative network of major industry players including IBM, Intel, and AMD. Faculty at the University of Utah, such as Ganesh Gopalakrishnan and Konrad Slind, can apply for SRC funding by submitting proposals that align with current industry priorities. Annual reviews measure progress, and successful proposals can secure $80K annually for three years. The program emphasizes collaboration across VLSI, embedded software, and nano technologies, with a focus on diversity through new fellowships for underrepresented groups.

  2. SRC Overview • Semiconductor Research Corporation • Outgrowth of MCC (Austin) • Member companies include IBM, Intel, AMD, Cadence, • Synopsys pulled out; Sun never there • Have periodic calls for whitepapers • Keep submitting whitepapers addressing point-of-view of champions of those WPs • When asked to submit a proposal, do so again knowing what they are looking for • Finally get a 3-year ride for 80K / each year

  3. SRC Overview • Once funded, one gets to submit deliverables reports • Deck of cards shuffled every 3-years (e.g. Berkeley dropped once) • Many tracks – each track has a different style • Annual reviews for renewal each year • Excellent opportunity to meet the key players in VLSI and embedded • Emphasis moving towards embedded software, low-level issues in VLSI, low-power, … • Best would be to try and aim for GSRC • Must collaborate with ECE faculty also

  4. SRC Overview • Recent Nano emphasis -- SRC / NSF collab (unfortunately filtered out at U level) • Excellent opportunity to work with industrial folks • Do an industrial sabbatical to further these connections… • Most likely they know abt you before you know abt them !! • www.src.org • Faculty funded at Utah: Myers, and now me/slind • Many SRC grad fellowships • New fellowships targeting Ugs and under-rep groups • Generally need to be associated with SRC-funded fac member
