  1. 2010 FALL AREA MEETING

  2. Value of What You Do

  3. “Far and away the best prize that life has to offer is the chance to work hard at work worth doing.” Theodore Roosevelt

  4. Football Scheduling Issues

  5. Football • History of Section Football • Scheduling Issues • FB Task Force Formed last winter • Recommendations in April • Refined in June and August

  6. Zero Week • Positives • Assists finding games for some schools • Teams with different bye weeks • Teams from other states • Not a major impact on current playoff system • Negatives: • Have to start practice on week early • Unfair advantage for week 2 • Must take one week off - Bye Week • How is that monitored • No Scrimmage

  7. Zero Week Policy • Both schools must apply • See sample application form • Must be approved – not for whoever wants to do this • During bye week – conditioning only • Only 3 days?? Or 5 days?? • Would go into effect immediately – 2011

  8. Questions?? Comments?? Feedback??

  9. Seeding – Point System • One standard point system • Size of school • Wins and losses of opponents • QRF or other program • Already passed – specifics late fall

  10. Scheduling Clearinghouse

  11. Possible Playoff Format Change • Form of Section Football • Still a concept • Details could be changed

  12. Possible Format • Everyone schedules 1st game or two, against opponents of choice • Natural rivalries • Former conference opponents • Those in close proximity • These games do not impact the playoffs • Difficulty – use Scheduling Clearinghouse

  13. Possible Format Continued • Next 7 games played in the section • Sections of 9 would be matched with another section of 9 to fill in the bye • play their section over a 9 week period • Only play 1 (2?) non-section games • in sections of 10 not every team would be able to play each other every year

  14. Format – Plan I • Play one non-section game, followed by 7 section games. • Conduct playoffs according to current format • Seeding based on results of games with section opponents • Top 8 advance to Section Playoffs. Could “cross-section” in all or some classes.

  15. Plan I Schedule – ‘10 Dates • Section Teams • Gophers • Hawkeyes • Wolverines • Wildcats • Badgers • Spartans • Lions • Hoosiers

  20. Questions???

  21. Format – Plan II • Play 2 non-section games to start the season, followed by 7 section games • Top 4 from each section play a 4 team playoff to determine the Sec Champ • OR cross-over with top 4 from another section • could depend on class or area of the state • Two games are played to determine the two who advance to the State (Games 10 and 11). • Those who don’t finish in the top four match up for game 10 within their section (or cross-over)

  22. Plan II Schedule: • September 2 or 3: (non-section) • Gophers vs Trojans • Hawkeyes vs Cyclones • Badgers vs. Bison • Etc. • September 10: (non-section) • Gophers vs. Longhorns • Hawkeyes vs. Panthers • Badgers vs. Packers • Etc.

  23. Begin Section Round Robin • September 17: • Gophers vs. Badgers • Hawkeyes vs. Wolverines • Wildcats vs. Hoosiers • Spartans vs. Lions • September 24: • Gophers vs. Wolverines • Hawkeyes vs. Wildcats • Etc. • October 1: • Gophers vs. Wildcats • Hawkeyes vs. Spartans • Etc. • October 8: • Gophers vs. Spartans • Hawkeyes vs. Lions • Etc.

  24. October 15: • Gophers vs. Lions • Hawkeyes vs. Hoosiers • Etc. • October 20 (Wednesday - MEA): • Gophers vs. Hoosiers • Hawkeyes vs. Lions • Etc. • October 26 (Tuesday): (Game 9) • Gophers vs. Lions • Hawkeyes vs. Badgers • Etc.

  25. October 30 (Saturday) – Game 10 • Section Semifinals – top 4 • Could cross-over with another section • Seeds 5 – 8 schedule an additional game • #5 vs #6 and #7 vs #8 – OR • Cross –over: #8 vs. #8, #7 vs. #7, etc. • November 5 (Friday) – Game 11 • Winners from Semifinals play • Winner is Sec Playoff Champ -- to State Quarterfinals • If cross-over, the top 2 would advance • November 12; 19-20; 26-27 – State Tournament

  26. Questions ???

  27. Positives • Everyone gets a schedule and everyone could play 10 games (minimum of 9) • Plan I allows 8 teams to advance to playoffs, and Plan II allows Four teams advance to playoffs which would allow the possibility of having cross-over games with another section • Opportunity for extra home game -- increased gate receipts and concessions • Significantly less time spent on scheduling

  28. Continued • Seeding for playoffs is not an issue -- scheduling of non-section games easier • Easy adjustment to move to a shorter, earlier season if necessary (loss of Dome). Season could be shortened by one game; or season could start one week earlier; or both. • Plan two eliminates 1 vs. 8 • More teams end season on a positive • Maintain at least some if not most natural/conference rivalries

  29. Continued • Can play non-section games against schools in different classes with no bearing on playoff/seeding • Regular season games mean more due to section standings and making the playoffs = create more interest during the regular season?? • Eliminates football as an issue for establishing and maintaining conferences • Section opponents may change every 2 years

  30. Potential Problems and Issues • First two to three games have no meaning? (already happens to an extent in conference play) • No – “second season” for half the teams in Plan II • Increased travel in some cases • Increased travel if there are cross-overs • Sections change – difficult to build rivalries

  31. Problems Continued • Challenges for sections of 9 and 10, but there are solutions • Does this fix the problem?? • Lose tradition of conference play – Section Champion instead of Conference Champion • All-Section teams instead of All-Conference teams • Regions would lose some revenue from section play

  32. Questions or comments What do You Like?? What Don’t you Like?
