  2. Eionet Established by COUNCIL REGULATION (EEC) No 1210/90 of 7 May 1990 on the establishment of the European Environment Agency and the EIONET

Eionet’s role Supporting EEA in providing sound, independent information on the environment through: • Coordinating data/information flows • Priority data Flows, Core set of Indicators • Providing expertise and advice • EEA assessments/reports • Linking EEA to member country sources • Promoting EEA activities and outputs

  4. Eionet structure NRC ETC NRC ETC NRC NFP National Focal Point EEA European Environment Agency ETC NRC NRC ETC ETC A network of around 900 experts from EEA member and cooperating countries (38) in over 300 national organisations

  5. National Reference Center (NRC) • An expert(s) in national organisations nominated and funded by the country to work with the EEA and the relevant ETCs in specific environmental areas related to the EEA work programme

  6. Why a need for review? • The current network structure and role description were defined and approved by Management Board in 2005 • To align the Eionet’s structure and operation with the priorities outlined in the EEA Multi Annual Work Program 2009-2013 • Review process started in Feb 08 – approved by MB in summer 2009 • 27 NRCs – NRC Forward Looking Information and Scenarios
