Language Ethnic groups: share a language, history,or place of origin Family structure Religion Customs: past practices that continue to be observed today Family provides physical and emotional needs: food, shelter, values, love, affection, and sense of purpose All of these strongly influence culture How do people define culture?

  5. Adaptation to the environment and finding uses for the natural resources What will be produced? For whom? Using those resources to earn a living Different types of economic systems: privately owned and operated or government owned factories What determines the economy of a culture?

  6. Why do we have governments? • To organize and defend the culture • To solve environmental problems • There are many different types of government. • Some people have a voice in government others do not

  7. How do arts and recreation define a culture? • Art, music,stories, poetry,and dance vary from region to region around the world and are special to each culture • Leisure activities may be special to a region : origami
