Today’s Objectives • Help parents understand what college and career readiness is and why it matters. • Introduce parents to the new standards and help them understand what to look for and how to help their children at home. • Inform parents about what AUSD is doing to transition to the Common Core State Standards (CCSS).

  4. A Closer Look: ELA/Literacy Shifts • Read as much non-fiction as fiction • Learn about the world by reading • Read more challenging material closely • Discuss reading using evidence • Write non-fiction using evidence • Increase academic vocabulary

  5. “Coming Into Language” by Jimmy Santiago Baca Argument Writing Prompt Even though words surround us every day their potential for power is often overlooked. In “Coming Into Language,” Jimmy Santiago Baca discovers “the power of language.” He writes, “Through language I was free. I could respond, escape, indulge; embrace or reject earth or the cosmos.” Write an academic argument in which you briefly summarize the author’s claim and discuss the extent to which language empowers you in your own life. Be sure to develop your argument by using evidence from the text. To support your argument use examples from Baca’s essay and other sources including your reading, school work, and/or personal experience.

What can parents do to help students succeed? • Stay involved, informed and engaged. • There are many ways to help: • Read with your children. • Reviewand discuss their homework. • Communicate with their teachers. • Attend meetings to learn more. • Learnabout the standards and how they affect your child’s education and school. • Lookthrough your child’s backpack each afternoon.

  11. How can you help your child in literacy? • Ask your child specific questions about what they read. • Encourage children to read, then write and speak about nonfiction text such as newspapers, magazines, and biographies. • Encourage children to research topics of interest and read series that relate to a central topic. • Have your child follow step by step instructions or a set of directions in order to accomplish a task, such as installing new software or operating a game.
