  5. WHY ARE BOUNDARIES IMPORTANT FOR CHILDREN? They …  • Teach children to respect others and their property. • Teach children self-control. • Teach children about acceptable limits. • Teach children how to be responsible adults. • Give children security. • Keep children safe.

  7. LOVING DISCIPLINE IS NOT … • Shouting and yelling • Dominating and controlling • Criticising and putting them down • Smacking or hitting • Being inconsistent • Being cold or detached

  16. GIVING CHOICES Giving a choice is a very effective tool. It can: • Help to avoid battles and power struggles • Help children to take responsibility for their actions • Help children to feel involved in decision-making • Help children to feel valued and respected • Give children a sense of control over their lives

REFLECTION • We have thought about what discipline means; that it is mainly about training. • We have considered the importance of setting loving limits and boundaries for children. • We have explored the reasons why it can be hard to set boundaries. • We have thought about the influences that have affected how we parent.

REFLECTION • We have looked at different styles of parenting - authoritarian, permissive and assertive/authoritative. • We have considered what style of parenting we most relate to and thought about how we would like to parent our children. • We have looked at some keys to positive parenting. • We have looked at the value of giving choices.

  19. FOCUS FOR THE WEEK • Think about your main style of parenting. Are there any changes you would like to make? • Try to give your child some choices this week. • Look again at the keys to positive parenting and choose one that you would like to focus on this week.

  20. NEXT WEEK Next week we will be looking at keeping our children safe.
