How much light is allowed into the camera

Aperture (f-stop)

The aperture of the camera works similar to the pupil of your eye. By adjusting your f-stop manually, you can open or close the aperture and allow more or less light in.

Typical f-stop values are:

2.8 4.0 5.6 8.0 11 16 22

Note that an f-stop of 2.8 opens much wider than an f-stop of 22. This is because f-stop values are really fractions. The f-stops above have an actual value of:

How long light is allowed into the camera

Typical shutter speeds are:

Just as with f-stops, the actual values of shutter speeds are fractions. Therefore,

a shutter speed of 500 is much faster than a shutter speed of 60.

To freeze action, you need a relatively fast shutter speed. The chart below lists some guidelines.

Different combinations of f-stop and shutter speed determine how much light enters the camera and for how long. By selecting an aperture (f-stop) and shutter speed manually, WE DETERMINE exposure. The combinations below will result in similar exposures by manipulating both f-stop and shutter speed to determine the equivalent total energy of light entering the camera.

By increasing the speed of the shutter, we decrease the amount of time light is allowed to enter. Therefore, opening the f-stop one stop more will allow more light in and produce an equivalent exposure.
