Introduction – ACP Observatory on Migration An initiative of the Secretariat of the ACP Group of States, funded by the European Union with the financial support of Switzerland, IOM, the IOM Development Fund, and UNFPA, and implemented by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) A network of research centers in the six ACP regions Designed to produce data on South-South migration for migrants, civil society and policy-makers and enhance the data management and research capacities in ACP countries. The main objective is to provide data and tools for policy-making integrating South-South migration into development policies and strategies 2

Update on ACP Observatory Activities • Migration Data Management Assessment • Undertaken by Mr. Olum Gondi • To analyze the current status of migration data management in Kenya, identify needs, and make recommendations (Validation Meeting in November) • Results to be presented at NCC (December/January) • Next steps for follow up to be discussed by NCC Members (examples a migration data sharing system between key institutions or the development of Migration Data Management Plan in the framework of the NCC) 5

National Workshop Background and Rationale • Harnessing the positive impacts of migration and minimizing its costs depends to a large extent on the existence of up-to-date and reliable data on migration. • Currently, policymakers often have limited access to the information and data they need for informed decision-making and policy planning on migration and development. • The Observatory aims to strengthen the governments’ capacities to collect, analyze, archive, harmonize and disseminate data on migration and to feed this improved data into proactive and evidence-based planning on migration and development. • Assessment of migration data management is on-going and status will be presented during workshop. Discussion about follow-up on recommendations and next steps. 6

National Workshop Background and Rationale - continued • Serves as a follow up to three inter-ACP regional workshops held in 2011, which allowed participants to gain knowledge on migration data management and identify gaps and needs in this area. • Six Kenyan participants from government, civil society and academia were trained as Resource Persons at these workshops last year. Two will now facilitate this workshop: • Ms. Joyce K. Owiti, Senior Immigration Officer • Mr. Stephen Macharia, UNFPA / NCPD • As Facilitators and Moderators 7

National Workshop - Objectives • Promote cooperation on migration data management and sharing in Tanzania • Raise awareness on the links between migration data, research and evidence-based policy-making and planning on migration and development • Foster exchange of information and collaboration on migration data management between relevant agencies, institutions and organizations in Tanzania. • Strengthen knowledge on migration data management and identify gaps and needs in this area. • Present migration data assessment and research results of the ACP Observatory on Migration • Introduce the Technical Assistant of the Intra-ACP Migration Facility and present ongoing activity of the Facility 8
